One of our favorite traditions at the Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra is breaking down a masterwork into its individual "ingredients." During this demonstration from Debussy's La Mer ("The Sea"), Music Director Bob McConnell highlights different instrument groups before putting them back together.

Think of it like a cooking show. You can enjoy the finished dish, but it's even more fascinating when you learn what each ingredient brings to the recipe.

That's part of what makes our concert special. We don't just perform great music - we help audiences discover how it works. Whether you're a lifelong concertgoer or attending for the very first time, you'll find our concerts engaging, educational, and fun.

Fun fact: Debussy composed La Mer between 1903 and 1905, and much of it was written far from the ocean itself. Rather than describing a specific place, he drew on memories and imagination to create one of the most beloved orchestral masterpieces ever written.

The music you're hearing is the thrilling conclusion of the first movement, "De l'aube à midi sur la mer" ("From Dawn to Noon on the Sea"), as the sun rises to its full brilliance over the water.

This season, you'll experience masterworks like this from some of history's greatest composers - music that can transport you to another placeand leave you with goosebumps.

The Southeast Iowa Symphony Orchestra is built on a simple idea: when a community comes together, extraordinary things can happen. Patrons invest in the arts, volunteers give their time, and musicians share their talent. What happens on stage is the result of that partnership. Every concert is made possible by people who believe that live music matters. Together you create something far greater than any one person could achieve alone.

All concerts are free for students and children.

Fill the hall. Share the experience.

The "Storm" section of Rossini's William Tell Overture comes after a peaceful sunrise and before the story's heroes rise up to fight for freedom. As the music grows louder and faster, the orchestra creates the sound of thunder, wind, and lightning sweeping across the Swiss mountains.

Rossini wasn't just painting a weather scene—he was foreshadowing the conflict and turmoil at the heart of the opera. The storm eventually passes, giving way to one of the most famous triumphant finales ever written.

The Southeast Iowa Symphony's 2026–27 season is packed with exciting musical journeys you'll want to experience in person.
