Every painting begins long before the first brushstroke.

For this special commission, I always start by placing a small heart on the canvas—a quiet reminder that I want to paint with love, purpose, and gratitude. Alongside it, I write a verse that inspires the journey ahead.

This time, it’s Psalm 8:9:

“Lord, our Lord, how majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

As I begin this painting, my prayer is that the beauty of God’s creation shines through every layer of color and light. I can’t wait to share the progress with you and watch this blank canvas become something meaningful for a wonderful collector.

A few months ago, we said goodbye to our sweet Cassie after 14½ wonderful years. She was the last of our family dogs, and losing her left such an empty place in our home. She wasn’t just a pet—she was a faithful companion through so many seasons of our lives.

My dear artist friend, Mary Hoffman, surprised me with this beautiful portrait of Cassie. She captured so much more than her likeness…she captured her gentle spirit, her soulful eyes, and the quiet sweetness that made Cassie so special. Every time I look at this painting, it feels like she’s still watching over us.

Having all four of our sons together with their beautiful families is becoming a rare gift, which made this weekend even more special. Watching the cousins laugh, play, jump off the dock, and make memories together reminded me how quickly these seasons pass.

My heart is full, and I’m so grateful for every hug, every smile, and every moment spent together. Family truly is life’s greatest blessing. 💙
