On the eve of Independence Day, we note that in 1776, the ancestors of the Gullah Geechee had long been in what became the United States -- and were active participants in the Revolutionary War. During the American Revolution, thousands of enslaved Africans served in both the British and American armies in return for promises of freedom and, when the British withdrew from the United States, they were accompanied by many formerly enslaved Africans from North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Some, like Thomas Peters (1738-1792) a formerly enslaved man from Wilmington, North Carolina, were among the founders of Freetown, Sierra Leone.
