Shem Creek on High | It’s been months since I’ve worked on anything so of course the natural thing to do is cram 15 hours of work into a span of a few days. Look at that detail in the zoom in though.👌🏼

I haven’t worked on much art in the past couple months. Adjusting to a new job, recovering from burn out, and prioritizing other hobbies haven’t left much desire to pick up a pen or brush. With all that said, I’m trying to get back into the swing of things. Mainly because I want to participate in and don’t want daily drawing to be a huge shock to the system. 👏🏼

Nearly done with my newest portrait! Can you tell who she is based on the hair alone?

Here are a couple clues: First, she modeled her style after the “town tramp”. Second, as of 2019, one of her largest nonprofits had given away over 130 million free books to children across the US.

Any guesses?

I have a little free time this week… which means finally finishing this piece! I’ve been slow at creating anything the last couple months, but looking forward to picking this back up again. This was a fun one of my first born (Gigi) to break the ice - regal, plant crazy, and a bit eccentric.

A while back I posted a preview of this piece, and it’s finally in its owner’s hands (and I’m finally getting around to posting it)! Thank you to the Dovers for having the cutest kid to use for portrait practice ❤️

Ever have those moments you get embarrassed for your former self? 😬

My Facebook Memories have been showing me cringeworthy things lately - including old art. 😬 When I made the Marilyn Monroe drawing on the left in 2010, I thought it was THE S**T. My misplaced confidence was really just a result of being the only person in my digital art class who already knew how to use Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. (Thank you to my teenage self for being an absolute nerd!)

I did NOT feel the same sense of pride when it came up this week. 😅

I decided to recreate it based on the same Marilyn photo I used last time. It’s safe to say my style may have changed *slightly*. 🤭What do you think? Have things evolved at all?

“I have a belief: What belongs to you, comes to you.” / Cher

I’ve been on an unconscious journey lately to redefine what meditation is to me. Last year, I had a regular meditation practice. We’re talking “sitting on a pillow in complete silence” kind of practice. As my involvement with the COVID response grew and work hours increased, that became hard to maintain...and now that I’m back on a 7 day work schedule, it’s nearly impossible to catch a break from myself. My head is constantly filled with what I need to be doing, the work that can still be done, and the chores I don’t have the energy to complete. Bitch is noisy...except for here.

Here? It’s a little quieter. A little less serious.

It’s funny to see how a hobby I’ve had since I was little has had the power to help bring me back to myself. How it’s helped to quiet my mind, even if it’s just for the hours here and there that I work on random pieces like this. It gives me the chance to step out of the loop and focus on lines and color, on creating something that isn’t mandated by someone else or scrutinized by the media and public or marked by a deadline.

I’m currently flip flopping between a couple of pieces, and finished one that I can’t quite share just yet. (Soon!) For now though, here’s Part 1 of a new Cher print I’m working on. (Part 2 is adding a background.) 🖤
