Alexandra Mascolo-David, Pianist

Alexandra Mascolo-David, Pianist The compact disc recording of Volume One of the Valsas brasileiras was highly praised by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution upon its release in 2001. and abroad.

“A splendid pianist—refined, searching and expressive, and her playing is loaded with insight and interpretative detail.”
The Washington Post

I am a pianist, pedagogue, and scholar, who aims to guide and inspire the next generation of musicians. I have performed and led workshops and master classes in Europe, Asia, and the Americas, including a New York debut recital at Carnegie Hall (Weill Recit

al Hall) in May 2004, which was favorably reviewed in The New York Concert Review. I am a native of Portugal and have devoted the last three decades to exploring and unearthing the music of Portuguese and Brazilian composers, especially that of Francisco Mignone. I am in the forefront of presenting Mignone’s piano music, and my performances, especially of his Valsas brasileiras (Brazilian Waltzes), have been widely acclaimed. Volume Two was released in 2007, and of both discs, the widow of the composer, Maria Josephina Mignone, stated: “It was very emotional to hear pianist Alexandra Mascolo-David perform the Valsas Brasileiras of my husband Francisco Mignone. Alexandra interprets Mignone with great sensitiveness, wonderful taste, and full knowledge of his compositional legacy. Undoubtedly, her musical contribution is important, of enormous beauty, possessing both a captivating sonority and a complete affinity with the romantic atmosphere of the waltzes.”

My continuing research on Mignone’s music earned a Research Excellence Grant from Central Michigan University to record Mignone’s Fantasias Brasileiras (Brazilian Fantasies) for piano and orchestra with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, under Maestro Raymond Harvey, for the White Pine Music recording label in a 2010 release. I am a founding member of the vocal piano duo Yara Ensemble (www.yaraensemble.com), with acclaimed mezzo-soprano Sarah Stone, stage director Annette Thornton, and media artist Eric Limarenko. The ensemble is devoted to showcasing music of the Iberian Peninsula, Latin America, and that of living composers. Yara Ensemble performances weave music, movement, and art into an intimate and accessible narrative journey designed for 21st century audiences. Our goal is to create an immersive performance experience where the audience is engaged in the act of discovery. Entertaining while educating is at the core of the ensemble's mission. In addition to performing traditional solo and chamber literature, I have championed works by numerous contemporary composers, especially those of the late David Maslanka. My performance in Maslanka’s “Piano Concerto No. 1 for Piano, Winds and Percussion” released by Albany Records in 2005 received accolades from the American Record Guide. I also co-commissioned Maslanka’s “Piano Concerto No. 3 for Piano and Wind Symphony,” as part of a consortium of universities. The world premiere of this work took place at Central Michigan University (CMU) in February 2017, with the composer in attendance, 6 months prior to his untimely death. I am a sought out and devoted teacher. American and international pianists attend Central Michigan University in order to study under my guidance. Students of mine have won prizes in auditions and competitions and consistently achieve success in their career paths. I am also an active participant in the movement devoted to performance anxiety management. My contributions to this cause include the development and implementation of a successful performance anxiety management course at CMU, as well as presenting papers at national and international conferences and offering lectures and workshops on the subject throughout the U.S. Another of my areas of interest has been that of how to teach effortless and injury-less piano technique. My own research and knowledge, coupled with private lessons with Edna Golandsky and Joseph Gurt on the Dorothy Taubman approach to piano technique, led Alexandra to create and develop her own method of building technical skills in a methodical and systematic way, whilst preventing students from incurring piano-related injuries, despite assiduous practice. I have taught at the Interlochen Arts camp, at Iowa State University, and currently am Professor of Piano at Central Michigan University. I am the ecstatic survivor of an unruptured brain aneurysm craniotomy (2010). Ever since my miraculous recovery, I have lectured throughout the U.S. on the vital role that music played in my full rehabilitation. After many months of motor, occupational and some speech therapies, I feel incredibly fortunate to have recovered my ability to play the piano and to have been given a renewed opportunity at life. I hold a piano diploma from the Oporto Conservatory of Music, Portugal, and the doctor of musical arts in piano from the University of Kansas, where my teacher was Portuguese pianist Sequeira Costa. I am the recipient of numerous prizes and awards in the music field. A message to all young musicians:
As many of you know, in 2015, I designed and implemented a performance anxiety management course at Central Michigan University due to what I felt was a pressing need to empower young musicians. I’ve now decided to take this course further and have partnered with the The Eric Domanico Foundation (TEDF), a not-for-profit organization devoted to the mental health of young musicians. During Mental Health Awareness Month (May), together, we will release short videos with powerful messages and simple exercises to bring the issue of mental health to the forefront. Stay tuned, and please feel free to share these videos to those who might benefit from viewing them.

Happiness is having former students come to town and visit! Today, my dear Chelsea Worden (Storms) stopped by with her husband, Brandon Worden, and little daughter Magdie. Chelsea first knocked at my door at age 16 and ended up graduating from CMU with a BM in piano in 2017. She then went on to earn her Masters degree in Arts Management from the University of Kentucky, and subsequently became a faculty member of the Flint Institute of Music. Presently, and concurrently with her duties as a mom whilst expecting her 3rd child, Chelsea has a large and successful private piano studio. Thank you, dear Chelsea for taking the time to visit and catch up with me, and congrats on having found personal and professional fulfillment! ❤️ 😃

Though I had not planned to announce my retirement from CMU on a solar eclipse day, it seems fitting to do so! Eclipses symbolize change, and I am certainly ready for a dramatic change. After 29 glorious years at CMU (+2 years at Iowa State University, my first job), I say: ‘Tis Time, my friends! :) I am indeed retiring from CMU as of August 16, 2024.

I have numerous professional ideas and projects looming on the horizon that I would like to explore while I’m still able to move and still have all my teeth. :) But more importantly, the necessity to spend additional quality time with the beautiful man I married 23 years ago, Patrick Donnelly, has become increasingly pressing (we ain’t gettin’ younger, that’s for sure…). Though there will be some slight adjustments to living under one roof again, Patrick and I are excited to embark on this new chapter of our lives; and so are our puppies!

I am grateful to CMU for having given me the opportunity to grow as a teacher and pianist. I feel fortunate to have had the privilege to instruct and guide so many brilliant, talented, and hard-working students over the past 3 decades. You were THE leading force behind my passion for teaching and I thank you for the important lessons that you too, taught me along the way. I shall miss you, the students, above anything else. I simply LOVE YOU!!!

Needless to say that my heart is also aching at the thought of leaving the loyal friends I made while living in Mt. Pleasant, but those friendships will live eternally in our hearts, wether or not we will see each other regularly. I will be sure to keep in touch, and that is a promise!

To the CMU and Mt. Pleasant community, I owe immense gratitude. Your enthusiastic support of my professional endeavors meant the world to me. Echos of your warm applause as you filled the Staples Family Concert Hall pre-Covid to hear my numerous performances, whether as a soloist, or as a collaborative artist with the Orpheus Piano Trio (in the first 5 years), the CMU Symphonic Wind Ensemble, the Symphony Orchestra, the Percussion Ensemble, as well as with Yara Ensemble and the Belle Donne Piano Duo (with Rubia Santos) made me believe that I had something of value to offer in the creative realm. I also cherish other collaborative performances with my CMU colleagues and with other musicians, nationally and internationally. The music making has always been superb and inspiring. I thank you for your loyal and endless support.

At last, I will be in-and-out of town for the remaining part of this calendar year to prepare for the big move to Kansas City, MO, in 2025. I look forward to seeing as many of you as I possibly can before I move. Beginning in mid-May, I will have the time to get together! :))) Hip! Hip! Hurray! :))) Stay tuned!

With love and immense gratitude,
Alexandra

Today, my Yara Ensemble duo partner Sarah Stone (Sarah Sarah Stone StageandSong) and I had the honor to perform composer Jay Batzner’s 6 Appalachian Songs for piano and mezzo-soprano at the 53rd Annual Pellegrini Festival of New Music, held at Ball State University (Muncie, Indiana). Our performance was directed by Annette Thornton. It was a stimulating festival of endless creativity. Most inspiring and energizing. And of course it was so good to see old friends again. 😊
