I like giving 5th graders more freedom and options. Peter Max is their inspiration. Their requirement is to draw BIG and OVERLAP to create foreground, middle ground, and background. We’re coloring with a combination of colored pencil, markers, and watercolor.

3rd graders drew a 3D cup (cylinder) filled with complex patterns. Drawing objects several times is good practice and creates patterns that are more fun than just stripes and polka dots.

In 4th grade, we looked at still-life paintings created by Vincent VanGogh, especially his vases with flowers. We’re not grown men livin’ in the 1800’s, so our “vases” are more FUN! 😆
*Overlapping to create space is a major skill we’re practicing!

2nd graders this year have now had me for Art since Kindergarten, so they know how to use ALL THE STUFF! We reviewed our most common materials and techniques (oil pastels, tempera cakes, collage), and they’re using what they know to create a background for a panda!
*Pandas coming soon!

In Kindergarten, we’re practicing scissor skills and procedures. Next week, we’ll learn how to open and close glue bottles, use tiny drops of glue, and use our imaginations to put our shapes together to create a picture.

1st grade is creating traditional Chinese noodle bowls with cobalt-colored designs. We drew them to look 3D, and will cut and glue them on a textured/painted background. Finishing touches will include noodles and chop sticks!
