Mt. Judea’s Little Free Library is housed in the old post office, just across from the Mt. Judea Mercantile.
We strongly suggest you walk across the street to see this not-so-little library when you come visit the Mercantile! Some of the locals keep it so cute, and the books are free for the borrowing!

The Mt. Judea Ladies Auxillary made a 2026 calendar and, ironically, the August quote is from the great Dolly Parton (see the fancy picture below).
I have a “Dolly for President” shirt, an “I Beg Your Parton” shirt, a Dolly cast iron skillet, the Dolly cookbook, Dolly’s cake mix, and a list of her quotes that play in my head. She was my favorite famous person and if you haven’t shed a tear over the last two days, then I’m not sure you’re human.
I remember going on a family vacation to Gatlinburg years ago, and my mom and dad driving down dirt roads, looking for the holler she might have been raised in. I also remember thinking that it looked a lot like Newton County!
What an amazing lady. I don’t think we can ever go wrong quoting her❤️

When you walk in the Mercantile and look left, you'll see this display hanging on the far wall. They are my dad's antler collection, that Randy Kent organized for us. Of course they aren't for sale, but we have lots of other goodies that are, so come see us!

I’m fortunate that Jerry Kent is my uncle, which means I get to hear some really great stories. I thought you might enjoy hearing them too, so he kindly sat down and shared with us about growing up in Mt. Judea. One of those memories involved taking a shortcut through the old Loyd Hefley store (now the Mercantile).
We don’t have a flagpole anymore, but you’re welcome to run through the store anytime we’re open, starting in September!

If you’ve been a fan of those wreaths we’ve had at the Mercantile…here’s your chance!
Our resident wreath-maker (aka: my sister) is doing a class at this beautiful location in Valley Springs one evening. You get to make your own, so you can have bragging rights!
Worried you can’t or that it won’t look good? Not a chance. My sister will do to you what she’s always done to me…she’ll say something like, “Sometimes it helps if you…” or “This lady online does this…” and proceed to fix it herself. The end result will be perfection.
So at least this one time, your wreath will be wonderful🤣

That boy on the left was born on this day in 1938, which puts that picture being taken around 1940 in his grandparents’ yard in Mt. Judea (you can see the Mercantile in the background). His name was Burl Allen Kent. He was my dad and he had quite a personality…and a love for fried pies!
So each year, on this day, my mom would make him fried apple pies with apples he grew in our backyard and dried on the metal swing set in the front yard.
He passed away when I was just a teenager, so those fried pies took on a new flavor- that of nostalgia.
Fried pies became our memory food. We had them at reunions, get-togethers, and even had them in place of cake at my wedding, because they represented someone and something really special. We’ve learned that many of you taste that ingredient in them as well❤️
I bet that little boy in the picture would be so surprised to see that scene from the right. I also bet I know what he’d buy😉
Come see us this fall. The Mercantile will be open on weekends in Sept-Dec, and Shelly Beth’s Fried Pies, LLC is likely coming to a town near you soon (and will randomly pop up at the Mercantile).

Old stores draw me in. They always have. I try to imagine the conversations that went on while sitting on the porch or around the pot-bellied stove of buildings like this in the early 1900s. Some of the topics would have included the ending of WW1, the stock-market crash, the invention of televisions, elections of presidents such as Herbert Hoover and FDR, WWII and the loss of local boys, winners of world series, and births of amazing people such as my (and maybe your) mom and dad and even some of our grandparents.
I’m fortunate to be a part of the life of this great store, and I hope you’ll join with us this season as we celebrate its story- past and present.
It opens for the fall season in 18 days!
