📜 History Happens Here – Mt Gretna Playhouse

The Mount Gretna Playhouse has deep roots in local cultural and community life, evolving from a Chautauqua auditorium into one of the oldest continuously active summer theatres in the United States.

The original Playhouse was designed by John Cilley and completed in July 1892, as the centerpiece of the newly created Pennsylvania Chautauqua. It was used for lectures, religious services, and concerts. The Playhouse survived several natural disasters, including major hurricanes, but was severely damaged in 1994 by ice and snow, and rebuilt by the summer of 1995.

Today, it is the summer home to three arts organizations: Gretna Theatre, Gretna Music, and The Original Mount Gretna Cicada Music Festival, Inc and continues to thrive as a venue for live, professional theatre.

Meet the director of Mad Libs Live!

Every production begins with a vision, and director Caroline Gorland has guided Mad Libs Live from the first rehearsal to the final performance you'll see on stage. We can't wait to share her work with you this Saturday!

Caroline is a director, producer, and performer originally from Harrisburg. Her Gretna Theatre credits include directing "Elephant and Piggie: We are in a Play" and “Knuffle Bunny” for the Family Series and performing in “Oliver’ and “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change” on the mainstage. Currently based in London, Caroline has worked on the producing teams of over a dozen major UK productions. She holds a BFA in Musical Theatre from Ithaca College and an MA in Creative Producing from The Royal Central School of Speech and Drama. She is thrilled as always to be working alongside her cousin Grace.

She didn’t just sing the blues… she lived them. 🎤🔥

Experience the raw, electric energy of Janis Joplin in A Night with Janis Joplin, a concert-style celebration packed with powerhouse vocals and iconic hits like “Piece of My Heart” and “Me and Bobby McGee.”
