The Story: Actor Michael Dorsey has a talent for losing jobs. Out-of-work and desperate, he makes a last-ditch effort at getting a gig by disguising himself as mature actress, Dorothy Michaels. When Dorothy’s career takes off, he finds himself trapped, as his lies are damaging every relationship in his life, yet it’s the success and fame he has been seeking. Every character has an interesting, well-written journey in this very funny, yet thoughtful and intelligent musical. Role descriptions are below:
Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels (40-45. Range A2 – D5) Michael is outspoken, stubborn, abrasive, frustrated and desperate to be a successful actor. Dorothy Michaels is strong-willed, understanding, and humorous. Slightly vain and completely lovable.
Jeff Slater (30-45. Range B2 – D5) Michael's roommate. A sardonic realist who lacks the ambition to live up to his potential. The voice of reason, Jeff sees the humor of situations; he is blunt and honest.
Max Van Horn (25-35. Top range: G4) A self-obsessed actor with a limited wit. A firm believer in his own hype who can’t imagine anyone not being attracted to him.
Ron Carlisle (40-55. Range F #2 – B4) An incredibly successful choreographer/director. He demands respect and is often disrespectful in return. The role requires dance skills.
Stan Fields (50-60. Any vocal range.) Michael’s overworked agent. Always to the point, he plays the game, but hates it.
Stuart (30-50. Range Eb3 – G4) He is the composer of Juliet's Curse.
Julie Nichols (30-40. Range E3 – G5) An actor at a crossroads in her life. Focused, self-aware and self-assured. She masks her pain and longs to connect.
Sandy Lester (30-40. Range G #3 – E5) Michael's ex-girlfriend, now a friend. She’s neurotic, pessimistic and self-deprecating. She makes her anxieties known loudly and really just wants to be happy.
Rita Marshall (50-65. Range F3 – B4) A levelheaded producer. Experienced and the voice of sanity and reason in a swirling pool of crazy. She is always a beat ahead of everyone and is very New York.
Suzie (30-50. Bb3 – Bb4) She is the lyricist of Juliet's Curse.
Ensemble (20s-40s. All vocal ranges.) Dance, vocal and acting talents needed in three male and three female triple threats who play everyone else in NYC, and the characters in the show-within-the-show, ‘Juliet’s Curse’.
