Throughout my childhood, I watched my dad, illustrator David T. Wenzel, sit day after day at his drawing table, turning the scribbled visions of Middle-earth in his sketchbook into a stunningly intricate graphic novel. Watching him taught me what it meant to be an illustrator- to lose yourself in a project and bring a world to life.

Like most artists looking back on their work, my dad carried a list of things he wished he could expand on or approach differently. At long last, he’s returned to The Hobbit graphic novel to infuse it with a bit of new magic. Today, the result of that work- an extended edition- arrives on bookshelves.

This book is beautiful! As a son, I couldn’t be prouder. As an illustrator, I’m in awe. I hope you’ll check it out and spend some time in this extraordinary vision of Middle-earth that shaped so much of my childhood.

The honey badger or ratel, is found across Africa and parts of Southwest Asia, where it survives on a varied diet that includes small mammals, reptiles, and of course, honey. Its durable, rubbery skin, combined with a remarkable immunity to toxins, allows it to navigate dangers other predators avoid.

Side-note: pretty psyched to discover the bounty of honey badger inspired music out there. Well played 🌎 .

The red-legged honeycreeper lives in tropical regions stretching from southern Mexico through Central and South America, reaching as far as central Brazil and the Andes, as well as the islands of Trinidad and Tobago. Its diet includes nectar, fruits, insects, and occasional seeds, often feeding in the treetops where flowering plants are abundant.
