Supporting the Arts since 1960
Newsletter for May 2026

Our May meeting featured Marge Sumner, who demonstrated a technique called a modified bigolafini, or mud cloth. Marge learned this technique in a 3-day class through the Michigan League of Handweavers. The workshop, presented by Judy Dominic of Ohio, used mud/dirt mixed with a 50/50 solution of plain soy milk and water as a fixative, and we painted on cotton fabric to make mud cloth. Mordants, alum or tannins, put on the cloth before or after painting with the mud, permanently hold the pigments in the cloth. Marge’s enthusiasm for this process shone through in her presentation to the association’s members. I heard from several members that they had a lot of fun learning the process.
Thank you, Marge, for this wonderful presentation
