Hello everyone! WOW!!!! Just WOW!!! What an event! What an extraordinary outpouring of love and support from everyone. There are no words to convey the full appreciation that we both feel. I sobbed when the check was revealed and Jim I think was stunned. Today even he teared up saying he never thought anyone would do something like that for him. Yet all of YOU did. So thank you. THANK YOU!
I am going to say a few things and do more specific thank yous as well now. At the end is where I will do my best to hyperlink everyone involved and I know I will miss people so if I do PLEASE message me so I can be sure you are included! Incoming LONG post. Perhaps it is a bit TMI for some, but myself and Jim want to share this with you. Want you to understand perhaps a bit more as to why the event happened, and why certain things during the event did as well.
Firstly, I want to apologize to everyone as some of the things which had been planned, did not happen. Most notably having the front room open. I also want to speak briefly about the disease which brought us all together. Alzeheimers' and Dementia's usual major symptom, the one everyone talks about, is memory loss. However it is A LOT more than that. It is personality changes, delusions, mood changes (anger, paranoia, depression), agitation, aggression, hallucinations and many other things, the severity of which can depend on the type of dementia the loved one has (among other things). That list above, along with the memory loss, carries the other major symptoms Jim has.
On Saturday afternoon, everything started out great. Jim was in a good mood as he greeted the volunteers laughing and talking with everyone. Then the time came to start setting everything up. I believe that flurry of activity, and to a more major degree, my own hastened and quickened pace as I tried to finish up for the scavenger hunt, caused an 'episode' for Jim. He became agitated. There wasn't even a chance for me to try and de-escalate the situation before he ended up outside and had a few choice words to say to the volunteers. Or rather I should say the disease had choice words to say. To several of those he spoke to, he loves you and thinks of you as family, and those words were not how he feels at all. Not to any of you. He wanted me to make sure you knew this, along with giving you a very heartfelt apology..
After talking to the volunteers., Jim then wandered over to a place where he felt safe, staying there for a long period of time. Chris, Tina and Linda, thank you for having that space for him. Wendy and Mark thank you for sitting with him and helping to draw him back out to himself. And he did eventually come back to being more of himself. I then took his hand and we walked up to say hello to everyone at the bowling alley and grab some food.
During this time period as you can see, my focus had to shift from having the front room opened, to making sure he was ok. We were all really hoping to have Jim hanging in the front room and allowing people to come in and chat and take pics with him etc...sort of like Santa =) but unfortunately....
Back to the Bowling Alley! Some more thank yous!! EmmaLeigh, the way you took Jim in and stayed at his side when we first got there
