I’ll be sharing all of our upcoming fall classes over the next week! All of the classes teach projects that are great opportunities to learn new skills, and are also great handmade gifts for the holidays. We’ve gotta get started early!

First up is the Penny Gloves by PetiteKnit

Join us for a three-part workshop to knit these cozy fingerless gloves. They’re a great project for learning magic loop and working a small project in the round.

Choose either the morning or afternoon session

Saturday, September 26, October 3 & October 10
10:00–11:30 AM
Or
12:00–1:30 PM

Skill level: Intermediate
You should be comfortable knitting and purling and have some experience knitting in the round. No magic loop experience is needed.

Next up for our staff introductions is Katie!

Katie can both knit and crochet, and she’s our resident “colorwork queen.” She teaches many of our crochet classes and is always happy to help troubleshoot a project or talk through a technique.

What’s always in your project bag?
“My fish pouch with all my notions, plus a loose measuring tape that never makes it back into the pouch.”

What’s your best knitting or crochet tip?
“Don’t be afraid to rip out your work! If the finished project is going to be something you hate or it’s not functional, it’s worth the extra time to make it right.”

What’s your favorite local spot in Morro Bay?
“For food, Shine and Dockside. For relaxing, I love sitting on the bay watching the otters and seals. I could watch them forever!”

What’s your favorite comfort movie or TV show? “Knives Out.”

Knit with only neutrals or only bright colors?
“Neutrals, because they’re more wearable, but I’d miss my bright options a lot.”

Only knit sweaters or only knit socks?
“Sweaters. No contest.”

Bamboo or metal needles?
“Metal needles all the way!”

Katie is wearing her Halibut sweater, designed by Caitlin Hunter, knit in Peer Gynt by Sandnes Garn.

New brand in the shop: Farmer’s Daughter Fibers

Farmer’s Daughter Fibers is a family-run, hand-dyed yarn company based in Great Falls, Montana. Their yarns are inspired by Montana, Western heritage, and a love of beautiful color. I’m so happy to be able to share their yarns with you all. We brought in two of their beautiful bases: Foxy Lady and Oh Dang!

Both bases are incredibly soft, and the colors are wonderful. They’re perfect for sweaters, shawls, and anything you want to make a little extra special.

Foxy Lady is a soft, silky single-ply blend of 70% superwash merino and 30% silk.

Oh Dang is a fluffy blend of 74% Suri alpaca and 26% silk. Oh Dang is especially lovely if you want a little halo without using mohair. And of course, they’re wonderful held together!

Next up is the Lakes Crew Cardigan. The pattern was written for Saona held double, and Ozetta’s sample sweater is made in the color Ozetta.

You can also use Knitting for Olive Merino held double, or one strand of Saona with one Merino. Two strands held together equal a worsted weight, so you can also use Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino or another worsted weight yarn for this project.

I’ve been really into marling lately, so I wanted to show some fun combinations. Since this sweater is knit with two strands held together, it’s the perfect opportunity to play around with color!

Here are a few combinations we put together:

Knitting for Olive Merino + Saona
Top is Blue Whale + Bottom is 1985

Knitting for Olive Merino + Saona
Top is Dusty Artichoke + Bottom is Groen

Saona + Saona
Top is Sarichef + Bottom is Ozetta

Knitting for Olive Merino + Knitting for Olive Merino
Top is Poppy Blue + Bottom is Ice Blue

Knitting for Olive Merino + Knitting for Olive Merino
Top is Artichoke Purple + Bottom is Bordeaux

These are just a few ideas to get you started. You could go for two similar colors for a subtle marl, or choose contrasting colors for something a little more fun!

Next up are the Great Lakes Pullover and the Lakes Jacket. Both patterns are written for an aran weight yarn held with mohair, so we have a couple of options we think would work really well.

First up is Retrosaria Rosa Pomar Matiz. You can use Matiz on its own or hold it with a mohair. Matiz will give you a more structured sweater with a little more body.

Matiz colors pictured:
First picture is 02

Second picture:
Top is 05
Bottom left is 04
Bottom right is 02

Another option is Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino held with Knitting for Olive Mohair. This combination will give you a softer sweater with a little more drape.

I thought the navy Great Lakes sample was so pretty, so I wanted to show you a navy option here. Both the Heavy Merino and Mohair are shown in the color Navy Blue.

Lakes Make-A-Long updates!

We are so excited to have so many of you joining us! We’ve had such a fun week helping everyone pick out their sweaters, and it has been so fun seeing all the different yarn and color combinations you’re coming up with.

For those of you who haven’t picked out your yarn yet, I’ll be sharing some yarn inspiration for each of the Lakes patterns over the next few days.

First up is the Lakes Pullover. The pattern was written for La Rinconada by WoolDreamers, which is such a beautiful yarn and a shop favorite. Another great option is Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino, which you can use by itself, or paired with a mohair.

La Rinconada colors pictured here:

Granito Natural and Niebla Natural
Cacao Natural and Tierra Natural
Mostaza Niebla

Knitting for Olive Heavy Merino colors pictured here:

Reds, top to bottom: Rust, Blood Orange, Pomegranate

Browns, top to bottom: Hazel, Cognac, Brown Bear

There are so many other colors available, so these are just a little peek to give you some ideas and inspiration. Come by the shop to see all of our options, or take a look online!

A few other updates:

We’ll be starting an Instagram group for everyone participating virtually. It’ll be a place to chat, share photos, encourage each other, and ask questions along the way. We’ll have it up and running before Cast-On Day, so stay tuned for more details.

I’ve also placed a restock order with Knitting for Olive and Retrosaria, so if you’ve been waiting on a sold-out colorway, it should be back by the end of the month. There are a few exceptions with Matiz colors that were already out of stock. If there’s a specific color you’re waiting on, feel free to message us and we can let you know if we expect it back in time.

This has already been so much fun, and we can’t wait to cast on with you all!

Locally Made Highlight!

Our good friend Kathy made us these custom scarf cuffs. We love being able to carry things made by talented local makers and friends of the shop.

Kathy is one of those people who is just incredibly talented at anything she puts her hands to. She used her leatherworking skills to make and stitch these, and we think they’re the perfect finishing touch for any scarf.

Kathy runs Doggrin Design, where she makes beautiful needlepoint dog collars. Definitely check her out if you have a pup.

She’s also offered to teach a workshop here on how to make your own custom shawl cuff, which we think would be so fun. Let us know if that’s something you’d be interested in!

I’m blown away by the response to our Lakes Make-A-Long already! We’ve gotten a few questions about how to participate virtually, so here are some more details on how to join us from wherever you are.

You don’t have to be local or attend the cast-on party to participate. Just follow the steps in the slide, and you can knit along with us from home!

Thank you so much for all of the support and excitement around this. We can’t wait to see everyone’s Lakes sweaters come together ❤️

We’re doing our first ever Make-A-Long!

I’ve made two Lakes sweaters already, and lately I’ve been wanting to cast on another one. But then I thought… why do it alone when we can do it together?

All of the Lakes patterns are designed by Ozetta: Hailey Smedley, and there are six different sweaters to choose from, so there’s something for everyone.

I’m so excited to try out this new format at the shop. It’s not a formal class, and there’s no step-by-step teaching. It’s more about learning together, working on our sweaters, asking questions when we get stuck, and hanging out with other knitters in a more casual way.

I think it’s going to be really fun, and I can’t wait to see everyone’s Lakes sweaters come together over the next couple of months.

Come knit a sweater, meet some new people, and be entered for a chance to win a $200 gift card! All the details are in the slides.

See you at the cast-on party!
