HEADLINES FAIRLY QUIET WEATHER PERIOD WITH NO UTILITY IMPACTS FORESEEN. SOME MINOR BOUTS WITH RAIN SHOWERS/SPRINKLES AND A FEW WET SNOWFLAKES POSSIBLE SUMMITS DEVELOP THURSDAY EVENING AND OFF AND ON THRU SATURDAY. BEYOND THE PERIOD WITH A DRYING OUT OF SORTS, WE MIGHT HAVE TO KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR FIRE DANGER, BUT THIS WILL BE LATER IN THE MONTH.

Scattered rain showers: Thursday night off and on into Saturday – No utility impacts – A few rounds of minor showers mostly late day or evening hours from a weak weather system.

Summit snowflakes: Thursday evening - No utility impacts – Maybe the last go-around with frozen precip? See beyond the period below.

Dry Project Weather: Wednesday into most of Thursday – Weak ridge of higher pressure in place eventually gives way to a weak weather system and waves of moisture but limited precip.

Hydrology: Below normal region wide.

Beyond the period: Minor quick moving weather systems could bring more wet snow flakes to mountain summits and some late April rain showers in the valleys.

HEADLINES MAIN UTILITY CONCERNS WITH GUSTY SOUTH TO SOUTHEASTERLY GRADIENT WINDS REST OF EARLY FRIDAY AFTERNOON, GRADUALLY FALLING OFF LATE AFTERNOON. POSSIBLE THUNDERSTORMS EMBEDDED WITH MODERATE TO BRIEFLY HEAVY RAIN SHOWERS EXITS TO CALMER CONDITIONS FRIDAY NIGHT. THE WETTEST WEATHER IS EARLY IN THIS OUTLOOK PERIOD. SLIGHT COOLING ALOFT MEANS POSSIBLE WET SNOWFLAKES RETURNING TO MOUNTAIN SUMMITS LATE SATURDAY INTO THE EVENING HOURS. A DRIER PERIOD ENSUES THEREAFTER. BEST PROJECT WEATHER MONDAY AND AGAIN TUESDAY BUT POSSIBLE SHOWERS MONDAY EVENING AS NUMEROUS SMALL DISTURBANCES AFFECT PORTIONS OF THE STATE AT DIFFERENT TIMES. SCATTERED RAIN SHOWERS POSSIBLE WEDNESDAY. OVERALL, TEMPERATURES RUN A BIT ABOVE SEASONAL NORMALS WITH A MILDER STRETCH LATER NEXT WEEK.

Gradient wind gusts: Rest of early Friday afternoon – See latest and future Intermediate Update. South to southeasterly gusts 40 to isolated 50 mph on western slopes and elevated terrain of generally central and northern Green Mountains, also onto Champlain Valley floor. Sub-Alert currently in effect expires at 2 PM.

Embedded thunderstorms: Late Friday afternoon/early evening – A few lightning strikes, no utility impacts. Embedded thunderstorms with the best chances across western Vermont valleys with maybe an isolated clap of thunder eastern areas.

Periods of rain or showers: Rest of Friday into Saturday – No utility impacts – Periods of rain showers moderate at times especially Friday, lighter Saturday.

Wednesday – No utility impacts – Scattered rain showers mainly across southern Vermont.

Dry Project Weather: Monday and again Tuesday. In-between small batches of moisture and rain showers.

Hydrology: Below to slightly below normal precipitation this Outlook period.

Beyond the period: Fairly active weather period with more showery episodes but no apparent utility impacts. Well beyond the period, a likely active stretch follows with the possibility of oscillating temperatures and possibly some wet snow in the higher terrain.

A bit of overlapping seasons with strong gusty south to southeasterly gusts (typically found in the Fall and Winter months) and some potential boomers with a last potent shot of showers and a few embedded thunderstorms late today. The two-season combo, brought to us courtesy of a deepening low pressure system near the Great Lakes. Gradual improvement over the weekend but colder.

Beautiful morning in progress. Mid level altocumulus will track out of the region setting up lots of sun before more high thin cirrus work back into the region this afternoon. We turn the corner of sorts with cloudier and unsettled wetter weather tonight and beyond, so make the most of it.

HEADLINES WEAK HIGH PRESSURE SYSTEM TO BRING EXCELLENT WEATHER FOR THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE MINUS SOME HIGH LEVEL MOISTURE PRODUCING SOME CIRRUS PUSHING IN NEAR OR JUST BEFORE THE TIME OF THE TOTAL ECLIPSE. THIS SHOULD STILL BE PRETTY GOOD COMPARED TO MANY OTHER AREAS ALONG THE PATH OF TOTALITY, BUT NOT PERFECT. GOOD PROJECT WEATHER LASTS INTO TUESDAY, BUT TURNS TUESDAY NIGHT AS CLOUDS OR GRAY WEATHER WILL BE THE RULE THE REST OF THE OUTLOOK PERIOD. MAIN UTILITY ISSUE THIS OUTLOOK PERIOD WILL BE A PERIOD GUSTY SOUTH TO SOUTHEASTERLY GRADIENT WINDS BUT AT GENERALLY LOWER SPEED (35 TO 45 MPH) GUSTS AFFECTING THE WESTERN GREEN MOUNTAIN SLOPES. RAINY WEATHER PLUS SNOWMELT LIKELY TO RAISE HEADWATER STREAMS AND EVENTUALLY MAIN STEM RIVERS, SOME REACHING INTO MINOR FLOODING CATEGORY. HYDROLOGICAL CONDITIONS WITH RAIN AND SNOWMELT PEAK LATE IN THE PERIOD INTO NEXT WEEKEND.

Gradient wind gusts: Thursday overnight into early Friday afternoon – lowered confidence – Some impacts but not widespread. A deepening area of low pressure will track into the eastern Great Lakes, steepening the pressure gradient. This, combined with some rain and cooler temperatures, brings south to southeasterly gradient wind gusts at marginal levels affecting primarily mountain summits and a narrow geography along western slopes of the Green Mountains, generally 35 to 45 mph peak gusts.

Dry Project Weather: Rest of Sunday into Tuesday – Weak but sprawling high pressure ridge across the region affording dry project weather rest of Sunday into Tuesday.

Best Solar: Sunday into Monday - Cloud cover begins to work in Monday afternoon with just some high level moisture in the form of cirrus. These clouds “may barely interfere” with Monday’s total solar eclipse based on timing as cirrus tracks in the northwest aloft at jet stream levels.

Hydrology: Above normal rainfall with a rainy period, plus extra snow melt, raising stream and river levels and perhaps reaching minor flooding on a few locations. Combined snow melt plus rainfall peaks Friday late this week.

Beyond the period: As we head into this weekend, rain showers to mix with and change over to snow showers with minor accumulation mainly high terrain, nothing to affect utilities but possibly high elevation travel. Weak high pressure ridging builds back following going into early next week.

Nor’easter near Nantucket will curl northeast today and tonight into the Gulf of Maine with additional wet snowfall for a time this morning but lightening up and perhaps even intermittent some parts of Vermont this afternoon. Gradually the low pressure system will loop and pull away but not for a couple of more days.

HEADLINES SIGNIFICANT WINTER STORM OUT OF SEASON DEVELOPS GRADUALLY WITH THE MAIN UTILITY IMPACTS ARE FIRST, CONCERNING EASTERLY WIND GUSTS TO 65 MPH WESTERN SLOPES OF THE SOUTHERN/CENTRAL GREEN MOUNTAINS, AND THEN WET SNOW LOADING UP ON TREES LATE WEDNESDAY INTO THURSDAY. MAIN IMPACTS LIKELY DUE TO WIND GUSTS AND WET SNOW LOADING WEDNESDAY NIGHT INTO THURSDAY, BUT GUSTS WILL BE OFFSET SLIGHTLY EARLIER THAN WET SNOW LOADING EFFECTS. CONFERENCE CALL 3:30 PM TUESDAY AFTERNOON FOR PREPARATIONS. THIS LONG FUSE STORM WILL NOT WINDING DOWN COMPLETELY UNTIL THE LAST FLAKES SATURDAY MORNING, BEFORE HIGHER PRESSURE BRINGS GOOD PROJECT WEATHER AND DECENT SUNSHINE. GOOD PROJECT WEATHER CONTINUES BEYOND THE PERIOD INTO MONDAY FOR THE TOTAL SOLAR ECLIPSE, AS GOOD WEATHER HOLDS FOR A WHILE. EVENTUALLY MID TO LATE NEXT WEEK, CLOUDS WILL INCREASE ALONG WITH CHANCES OF RAIN AND MILD TEMPERATURES.

Wintry Mix/Wet snow: Wednesday night into much of Thursday – Impacts likely for utilities due to wet snow loading, with locations generally favoring elevated terrain and portions of Vermont east of the Green Mountains. See latest Heads up.

Gradient Wind Gusts: Wednesday thru early Thursday morning – Impacts likely due to strong easterly gradient gusts affecting Green Mountain higher terrain and adjacent western slopes onto valleys floors especially central and southern Vermont counties. See latest Heads Up.

Lighter Snow/Rain Showers: Thursday night into Friday night – Mostly post storm effects winding down. Some additional wet snow accumulations more elevated off valley floors and lighter amounts, but may exacerbate wet snow loading on higher terrain above 1500 to 2000 ft.

Dry Project Weather: Rest of Tuesday – 1036 hPa high pressure system over Labrador, ridges back into New England for a good project weather day.

Sunday – High pressure ridges south from Canada and brings generally dry fair conditions along with a decent warming trend.

Best Solar: Sunday.

Hydrology: Above normal precipitation (see below)

Beyond the period: Increasing cloud cover but milder with increasing chances for rain mid to late next week.

Enjoy what may be the last sunshine you’ll see between tonight and Sunday. A big storm system bringing high winds, and wet heavy snows will gradually develop over the next 12 to 24 hours while spreading north tomorrow. Estimated total snow accumulations of plowable 5 to locally 13″ of winter wonderland look, coming out of “dead-stick season” to a different look.

Below cloud climatology for this time of year, vs. Euro model forecast showing mostly sunny skies, and high thin Cirrus/Cirrostratus clouds about all. This is the longer range forecast and yes it still could change, but feeling rather optimistic with decent sprawling area of high pressure over the region.

Good Friday morning! We’ll expect to see more sun than we have over the last couple of days for this Easter weekend. There will be an annoying northwesterly wind that’ll be most gusty Saturday. Are we done with snow? No. Plan ahead for mid to late next week.
