Cosentinoworks

Cosentinoworks Daniel Cosentino (1974, New Jersey, USA) is a Multimedia Artist and educator specializing in photographic processes and discourses.

He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Imaging Arts/Photography from the RIT (2009). I am a multimedia artist, educator, and curator specializing in photographic processes, discourses, and interdisciplinary practices. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from Rutgers University (1998), a Post Baccalaureate Certificate in Studio Arts from Studio Arts Center International (SACI) in Florence, Italy (20

02), and a Master of Fine Arts in Imaging Arts/Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology (2009). Throughout my career, I’ve worked across both commercial and academic sectors. Early on, I managed Jackson Hole Custom Color Lab in Wyoming and served as a museum preparator at the George Eastman House International Museum of Photography in Rochester, NY, during my graduate studies. From 2010 to 2020, I worked with RIT’s global programs in Europe, teaching photography, graphic design, and web design, while also holding key service and administrative roles, including Chair of Academic Senate, Director for Media Programs and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Today, I continue to actively engage with local and international artistic communities, and I currently reside in my home state of New Jersey. My artistic work focuses on exploring latent communications, navigating the balance between intended meanings and the symbols that lie beneath the surface. My personal experiences—from the death of a close friend to the discovery of new literature—inform my practice across various mediums, though photographic discourses remain central. My work has been featured in multiple national and international juried exhibitions, including two-time inclusion in the New Jersey Arts Annual, The Royal Photographic Society International Photography Exhibition, The Academy Art Museum, The Finger Lakes Exhibition (New York’s upstate biennale), as well as at venues such as Herron School of Art and Design, The University of Texas, the SOHO Photo gallery, and the Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts. I’ve exhibited my work globally, with shows in Serbia, France, Italy, the UK, China, Australia, South America, and across the United States. Some of my recent and upcoming exhibitions include displays at the Rusteberg Gallery at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, the Epperson Gallery in California, the Emerge Gallery in Asheville, North Carolina, and The Naturalist Gallery in New York City. I also have an upcoming publication in Full Bleed, a publication produced by the Maryland Institute College of Art, which highlights my ongoing contribution to artistic discourse. Beyond exhibitions, I am actively involved in art and design education. I’ve lectured on a wide range of topics, including art education, institutional critique, and community design. My leadership extends to service roles, including being a member of the College of Reviewers for The Design Journal (a Taylor and Francis publication), a design consultant for Community Design Rochester, a board member for Stacion, Center for Contemporary Art in Kosovo, and a former board member of Open Data Kosovo. In addition to my exhibitions and scholarly work, I’ve been honored with numerous grants and fellowships, including awards from the NJ State Council on the Arts, Lakeland Bank, First Energy Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Open Society Foundations.

I had the pleasure today of presenting to the Mission Subcommittee of the Board of Trustees at Saint Peter’s University on the ongoing work of the AI Task Force (which I chaired this year).

The discussion focused on the rapidly changing landscape of AI in higher education, including emerging technologies, Blackboard Ultra integrations, Gemini and other AI systems, opportunities for teaching and research, and the importance of approaching these developments through the lens of Jesuit mission, ethics, discernment, and human-centered learning.

I also got a chance to highlight some of the things the latest generation of AI can do, including research, image creation, video creation, rubrics, vibe coding and more.

Thank you to Fr. James Miracky, S.J. and the committee for the invitation and thoughtful engagement. It was a privilege to contribute to the conversation.

I am looking forward to presenting a talk titled "Photography Is Born: A Journey in Photography’s Art and Innovation" on Tuesday, March 24 at 12:00 PM at Haven House in North Cape May, New Jersey.

This lecture traces the birth of photography in the nineteenth century and its earliest transformations across science and art. We will look at how figures such as Daguerre and Talbot worked with light, chemistry, and optics to fix the visible world onto paper and metal. From camera obscura experiments to early portraits and landscapes, photography quickly became both a marvel and a practical method of documentation.

The talk considers how photography reshaped perception and memory and helped form the foundations of modern visual culture.

Grateful for the opportunity to share this history and to connect with audiences interested in the evolution of image making.

I'm doing more of these talks around the state. Reach out if this fits your community too.

Every so often a student sends something that stops you in your tracks - today it was this entirely visual résumé from Berk Karşı, one of the hardest-working, most self-motivated young designers I’ve had the privilege to teach.

Berk came into my classroom with an interest in Graphic Design… and since then he has taken off. He’s become an active creator across photography, video, branding, fitness media, and Adobe’s full creative suite. His resume says everything without a single paragraph - completely visual, beautifully organized, and unmistakably him.

Berk is fluent in Turkish and English, deeply committed to his craft, and absolutely available for hire. Anyone looking for a driven designer, content creator, editor, or visual storyteller should take a serious look — this kind of initiative and clarity at this stage of a career is rare.

Proud of you, Berk. Keep going! the work is awesome!

I’m honored to share that my piece Spine has been accepted into the 2026 International Juried Exhibition at The Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster, NJ.

The exhibition runs January 30 – March 29, 2026, with an opening reception on January 30, 6–8 PM.

This year’s call brought in over 800 submissions from 304 artists, with only 59 works selected. I'm humbled to have my work included.

This year’s exhibition was juried by Donna Gustafson, a distinguished New Jersey–based curator, critic, and writer with a PhD in Art History. Her career includes serving as Chief Curator at the Zimmerli Art Museum at Rutgers University, Director of Exhibitions at the Hunterdon Art Museum, and Chief Curator at the American Federation of Arts in New York. She has organized major exhibitions on artists such as George Segal, Angela Davis, Lalla Essaydi, LaToya Frazier, Coco Fusco, and many others, with support from the Mellon Foundation, the Warhol Foundation, the Luce Foundation, and the NEA.

My sincere thanks to Donna Gustafson and to The Center for this opportunity. If you’re local or passing through New Jersey during the exhibition, I’d be grateful if you could stop by and see the work in person.

Thank you to everyone who braved the cold and came out to our show last night. We had a full evening of thoughtful conversations about our work, about New Jersey, about the future of Saint Peter’s University, and some especially meaningful discussions with students.

One of the photos from the night includes SPU President Benitez, Dean Jeff Dueck, and Vice President for Academic Affairs Weidong Zhu, who were generous with their time and support throughout the event. On the end is Dr. Chris Durante, a theologian, who is our ardent supporter.

(That one with Slash is a gift from Weidong 😂)

We’re grateful to everyone who stopped by, asked questions, and helped make the night a real exchange of ideas. More conversations ahead.

For once I wasn't photographing all night so I will add more pictures as they arrive.

Some news for upcoming exhibitions, this one in Texas:

One of my portraits has been selected for "TPS 33: The International Exhibition", the Texas Photographic Society’s annual juried show.

From over 850 submissions worldwide, Barbara and Emily chose just 50 photographs. I’m honored (and quietly delighted) that one of mine will be among them.

The exhibition opens December 18, 2025 and runs through February 7, 2026 at the Center for Contemporary Arts in Abilene, Texas. Closing reception February 7 — details to follow.

It’s always a little mysterious which images will resonate with which jurors at any given moment. When a photograph finds its people, it still feels like magic.

Grateful to Barbara Bosworth and Emily Sheffer for their careful eyes, to the Texas Photographic Society for its continued advocacy of photography, and to all of you who still check in even when I go quiet for months. More soon.

Barbara Bosworth grew up in Novelty, Ohio, and along the shores of Lake Erie. She lives in Massachusetts, where she is professor emeritus of photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston. Her large-scale photographs have been widely exhibited in retrospectives at the Denver Art Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, and Phoenix Art Museum, among many others. Her celebrated books include The Heavens (2018), The Meadow (2015), Natural Histories (2013), and Trees: National Champions (2005), all published by Radius Books except the last (MIT Press/Center for Creative Photography).

Emily Sheffer is a fine art photographer and book artist. In 2017 she founded Dust Collective, a handmade photography book collective that has now published more than a dozen titles. She earned her BFA with Departmental Honors from Massachusetts College of Art and Design (2015), was named a LensCulture Top 50 Emerging Photographer that same year, and served as book-artist-in-residence at Maine Media Workshops in 2019. In 2022 she completed her MFA at the University of Hartford Photography program on a Merit Scholarship. She currently lives and works as a studio director in New England.

Changchun International Sculpture Park

It was a beautiful fall day in Changchun and the International Sculpture Park was full of life. The entrance opens with a sculpture by Rodin and the park continues with works from artists around the world. The scale of the collection and the care in its layout are remarkable.

Families, students, and young photographers filled the park, taking pictures and enjoying the weather. Around the large central sculpture, drone photographers were at work. The people here are worldly and open, curious and happy. The landscaping, planning, and sense of space make this one of the most thoughtfully designed public parks I have visited.
