Our play, True Reflections, is tomorrow! We hope you can attend: 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School, 101 James St., in Morristown, NJ. The teens will perform their original play and then lead a talkback with the audience. True Reflections was written by the teen participants of our 2021 Summer Program.

This clip is from rehearsal today. In this scene, the character Karla (played by Jocelyn, 13) recalls a poem her mother shared with her. Translating the poem is the therapist, played by Odalis, 14.

To prepare for performing their play in front of an audience, our Summer Program participants practice reading in front of others slowly, purposefully, and with strength in their voice. On this day, we read the poem "from The Black Maria," by Aracelis Girmay, which Ariel, one of our participants, brought in to share and discuss with the group. Here, teen participant Shae practices reading a line from the poem ("space speckled with stars & the moon far off") with coaching from teaching artist Adia Harris.

During our summer program, the teens write and then perform an original play that sparks a discussion in our community. Here's a look at one teen's process to generate ideas. We will perform our play for family, friends, and the community on Fri., Aug. 13, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the auditorium at Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Morristown. The teens will host a talkback after the performance. We hope to see you there!
