✨Instructor Spotlight: Miss Hannah Kubic✨

Hannah has been dancing since she was four years old and is beginning her second year as one of our Company dancers! She started assistant teaching 5 years ago, and is now beginning her 2nd year as a teacher at BDC.

Hannah says being at "The Barre" has allowed her to develop not only her skills as a dancer, but also as a leader. She loves working with students as they build confidence, learn new skills, and discover the joy of dance!

When she's not dancing, she still finds ways to express herself creatively, through art and music. Hannah plays percussion with the MJHS band, and enjoys spending her free time drawing and chrocheting. She even crocheted her own pointe shoe bag!

One of the things she appreciates the most about our studio is its Christ-centered environment. She expresses "it has been such a blessing to be a part of a place where faith is valued and where I never have to worry about compromising my beliefs when it comes to costumes or performances...I am so thankful to be a part of such a wonderful studio."

As a senior in high school, Hannah plans to continue her training by minoring in dance, and we can't wait to continue watching her grow along her journey!!

✨Instructor Spotlight // Flash Back Friday Edition: Mrs. Bekah Braden ✨

Bekah has been a part of the BDC family since it's very first year in the making. She started off as "just a mom" to two dancers, then started dancing with the Adult Program, and later found her way into teaching. But her passion for dance didn't begin in 2021...it goes all the way back to 1995!!

Bekah began her training with Briarwood Ballet, where she cultivated a love for classical ballet and the etiquette behind the art form. But, most importantly, a seed was planted and a path way was paved for her to begin using her gifts and talents to glorify the Lord through dance!

Fun Fact: She and Mrs. Meredith trained at Briarwood at the same time! Although, they trained on different days of the week, they were in several performances together. They have MANY mutual dance friends and love reminiscing about the "good ole days!" 😉

In 2000, Bekah transferred to Westwood Ballet, a sister school of Briarwood, and continued her training until 2003. It was then when she made the hard decision to swap her focus from dance to pursue music - her other passion!

She attended The University of Mobile where she earned a degree in Church Music with an emphasis in vocal performance. While in college, she participated in musicals, operas, show choir, worship choir, and a traveling worship group called IMPACT.

She continued to use her love for both music and dance all through out those formative years, and continues to use them now outside the studio walls, at her church, their family's homeschool co-op, a local theatre, and competitions through the National Beta Club.

She married her college sweet heart, Drew, and together they have two beautiful daughters, Maggie and Jojo, who have continued their training at The Barre Dance Company for the last 5 years!

Bekah wears many "hats" at the studio. She is currently teaching/choreographing ballet and contemporary to multiple age levels. You will often find her behind the scenes helping with administrative tasks. During performances you will often find her with a clipboard in one hand, a camera in the other, and a headset on her head!

But the latest "hat" Bekah will be wearing is that of her NEW ROLE as our Events & Marketing Director!!!

✨Instructor Spotlight + an ANNOUNCEMENT✨

As you may have already noticed, some exciting changes are happening around our Morris studio!! Mrs Kara Williams has now stepped into our Student Success Advisor role and will be greeting new and returning students, managing our office desk, taking payments, & answering any questions you may have. We are so exited to have her join our team, utilizing her MANY gifts and talents, but don’t worry, she is still teaching!! 🩰

😉 Now, to learn a little more about her…

Kara has lived in Alabama for 20 years, but she is originally from New Orleans, Louisiana! She moved to Mississippi when she was two years old and started dancing at the age of six! She instantly fell in love with ballet, but has developed a deeper love for it through the years.

In 2006, her family moved to Dora, Alabama where she continued her training at Westwood Ballet. After taking some time off for schooling, marriage, and having a baby, she came back to dance in 2025 as part of BDC’s adult dance program, and she says it was the best decision she ever made!

​Kara recalls, “I still remember my very first dance teacher and the impact she had on me by fostering my love for dance and encouraging me. It is my prayer that I do the same thing for every child that I encounter here. I am so thankful God placed me at The Barre Dance Company. I am grateful to be in an environment where I not only get to teach dance, but also glorify the Lord while doing it!”

​When she is not at the dance studio, she enjoys playing with her l 4 year old daughter, and working at her church, where she currently serves in the church nursery, teaches a young girl’s class, and sings with her church’s choir/praise team!

She also enjoys crocheting, reading, and has recently started competitive running where she is currently training for her first half- marathon!

Our next instructor spotlight is:
✨Miss Anna Sutherland✨

Anna has been dancing for 20 years and teaching for 3 years. She graduated from Wallace State Community College with an associate’s in Dance Education and a certificate in Choreography. She is currently a student at UAB studying Elementary Education.

In Anna’s own words: “God has blessed me with a passion for teaching and helping dancers grow in their faith as well as in their technique.”

In her free time you can find her at church, taking a walk with friends, reading, or hanging out with her cats!

And TODAY just happens to be her birthday!! So, let’s help us celebrate her on this special day with all the birthday blessings!! 🥳🎉🎉🎉🎉

✨Meet Lily Kate Nicholson✨

Lily Kate is originally from Ft. Lauderdale Florida, where she grew up training in ballet, contemporary, jazz, tap, and hip hop.

She is now heading into her second year of teaching hip hop, tap, and jazz at The Barre Dance Company in Morris, while also heading into her Junior year at Samford University as an elementary education major, and a member of Samford’s Dance Company.

Lily Kate is so excited to keep pursuing her love for teaching and dance with her BDC family!

✨Meet Mary Segars - one of our newest instructors in Morris !✨

Mary was born and raised in Trussville, Alabama. Her passion for ballet began at the age of four when she started her training with Briarwood Ballet. During her time there, she spent four seasons with the pre-professional company, Ballet Exaltation, where she performed various soloist and principal roles.

Mary has had the opportunity to work with guest choreographers such as Kevin Jenkins and Jiří Vobořský, as well as perform in places like Lima, Peru; Lancaster, Pennsylvania; San Diego, California; and the Czech Republic.

In 2024, she joined the Alabama Ballet Day Program, where she spent two years training and has now been promoted to the Alabama Ballet studio company. She is passionate about sharing God's love with audience members and students through the art of dance!

Mary will be teaching our Company dancers in ballet, as well as contemporary. Please help us welcome her to our BDC dance family!
