🎭 From Mountaineer to Mentor — Welcome Home, Cody LeRoy Wilson! 💛💙

Today, WVU Theatre & Dance had the pleasure of welcoming Cody LeRoy Wilson (BFA Acting, Class of 2014) back to his alma mater! Cody spent an incredible hour and a half with our students sharing stories, career insight, words of wisdom, and encouragement as they continue developing their own paths as artists.

A very special thank you to Cody for taking the time to return home, pour into our students, answer their questions, and remind them of all that is possible beyond their time at WVU. We are so grateful to have alumni who continue to give back to the next generation of Mountaineer artists. 💛💙

Now it’s our turn to show up and support Cody as he takes the stage in his one-man show, Did My Grandfather Kill My Grandfather? 🎭

📅 TONIGHT — Friday, August 21 at 7:30 PM
📅 Saturday, August 22 at 7:30 PM

TONIGHT! TONIGHT! TONIGHT!

We have an extra special production coming this August! 🇻🇳💭

"Did My Grandfather Kill My Grandfather?" is a compelling, autobiographical one-man show that follows Vietnamese American actor and playwright Cody LeRoy Wilson’s journey in uncovering his family’s immigration story from Vietnam to America.

Adopted by an American soldier and brought to West Virginia as a baby, Cody’s mother was left with no connection to her homeland, leaving Cody with endless questions. Over the years, he searches for untraceable answers, only to come to a grim fantasy depicting his two grandfathers on opposing sides of the Vietnam War. At its core, the play asks, “What does it mean to be Asian American?” The conclusion Cody has found is complicated, but it is one all Americans need to hear.

This production in Morgantown marks a homecoming for the show’s creator. Cody was born and raised on a farm in a small West Virginia community called Plum Run. He graduated from West Virginia University in 2014 with a BFA in Acting before moving to New York City to pursue theatre. Now, Cody is thrilled to return home to share this deeply moving story set in the very same holler he was raised in.

From an early age, playwright Cody LeRoy Wilson started questioning where he was really from and how he got to West Virginia. Examining his identity, race and family legacy led him to unearth his personal history. As he continues to unpack the complexity of dual heritage, Cody attempts to reconcile lost family history and the brutality of the war amidst his lived experience with his adopted family.

On stage, Cody dramatizes a real dream he had — switching perspectives between his American grandfather and his imagined Vietnamese grandfather on opposing sides of a jungle battlefield. The titular question that haunted Cody into penning this show comes to life on stage as he must ask: Did My Grandfather Kill My Grandfather?
