Our hearts are heavy as we mourn the passing of James Monroe.

While the world knew him as the son of the Father of Bluegrass, James earned the admiration of generations through his own unwavering commitment to the music, the traditions, and the legacy his family helped create. For decades, he carried the Monroe name with humility, determination, and deep respect for the art form his father pioneered.

From his earliest days performing alongside Bill Monroe and the Blue Grass Boys to leading his own beloved Midnight Ramblers, James devoted his life to ensuring that traditional bluegrass would continue to inspire audiences for generations to come. He often reminded us that bluegrass was far more than simple mountain music—it was an art, one deserving of dedication, discipline, and heart.

Here at Bill Monroe Music Park & Campground, we were privileged to welcome James to the stage over the years and witness firsthand his passion for preserving the music and history that make this place so special. His performances, stories, and steadfast devotion to his father’s vision will forever remain a treasured part of our festival family.

We extend our deepest condolences to his family, the countless friends and fans whose lives were enriched by his music.

Thank you, James, for carrying the torch so faithfully. Your voice, your kindness, and your love for bluegrass will live on wherever Monroe music is played.

Rest in peace, James Monroe.

“I’m proud of him. I’m proud of my heritage. And I’m proud to still be carrying the Monroe name out there.” — James Monroe [Lawrence Journal-World]
