📣Calling all artists!

Our “Circularity at Play” Artist-in-Residency is back for the Summer of 2027, and we’re looking for a visionary artist to bring creativity, sustainability, and community together in Morganton, NC while exploring the use of fiber and textiles. The chosen artist is responsible for developing and creating three works of art that explore circularity and are rooted in place. Artists are also encouraged to explore the following themes: Innovation in textiles & fibers, Creative placemaking, Cultural storytelling, The future of work.

✨ Residency Highlights:
- $6,200 artist stipend
- $300 material budget
- 4 weeks of housing Provided

A few weeks ago Cummins visited TOSS and brought 200 reusable drawstring bags filled with snacks and sweet, encouraging notes for our afterschool students! The students absolutely loved them and could not wait to dig into all the yummy snacks! 😋🍎

These bags are a reminder to our students that they are supported and cared for by their community. Small acts of kindness can help make a big difference. We’re so grateful to have community partners who help make our afterschool program even more special.

A huge thank you for donating these snack bags and for making the children’s day amazing! We truly appreciate your generosity and support of our TOSS community. ♥️

The TOSS Summer Days Gallery isn’t over yet!

We’ve moved the gallery over to CoMMA Performing Arts Center for the month of October. Not only will there be artwork from students over the summer, but as well as from TOSS interns and staff. Most of these pieces will be available for purchase.

We’ve also added in a special section dedicated to our very own Miss KaDe, a long time TOSS volunteer who has been with us for 7 years. Just this year alone, she’s already contributed over 200 hours! Using yarn donated to TOSS, Miss KaDe tried some new techniques and made beautiful crocheted mandalas. She has generously donated them back for donation, so be sure to check it out!

It was a great first month back for TOSSworks! This September, students from Hillcrest, Glen Alpine, Mull, and Forest Hill Elementary learned about gesture drawing and how practice makes our art better. By practicing the studio habit “observation,” students were able to notice details and capture light values in their drawings! Working with toy dinosaurs and drawing mannequins, students were able to learn new tips that will advance how they draw and create art!

Thank you so much to the North Carolina Museum of Art for supporting TOSS and making these workshops possible!

Adult Workshop Series: Pottery Workshop

Join TOSS in a two-part pottery workshop, taught by Thomas Purello and Gláucia Mir, where we will be designing and handcrafting our own food platter from clay!

1️⃣Part One (Oct 18): Explore the exciting world of hand-built pottery with Thomas Purello. Students will learn the skills and techniques needed to create a beautiful, functional, and stable platter.

2️⃣Part Two (Oct 25): One week later, students will join Gláucia Mir to glaze their dried pieces and receive a behind-the-scenes walkthrough of the kiln firing process.

All materials and tools will be provided. Come with thoughts and ideas about the food you love to eat and how you want to serve it!

*Can’t make the second date? Attendance on 10/25 is optional and the workshop price is reduced to $60. If you choose this option, your platter will be clear glazed for you.

⭐ Community Collaboration ⭐

Over the past year, TOSS has had the opportunity to collaborate with The Enola Group - Burleson House to make these heart-shaped and round trays.

Participants from their Signature Day Program hand-built the trays with clay provided by TOSS, and our Middle School Summer Camp students assisted in glazing the trays alongside TOSS staff and interns. Once everything was ready, the trays were then final fired in the TOSS kiln!

These pieces are more than just a clay tray - they represents shared time, knowledge, generosity, and the power of creating together.

You can check out these trays in our TOSS Summer Days Gallery at Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton until the end of September. The trays are available for donation-based purchasing, with a suggested donation of $10-$20. Donations made will go towards TOSS’ scholarship program.

Come by Fonta Flora in Morganton to see what our 2026 TOSS Summer Camp students have been creating! Over 200 students, K-8th, explored the intersection of art and science through ceramics, fiber, printmaking, sculpture, and painting. Students’ artwork will be on display throughout September with some artwork available for purchase. All procedures from sold artwork will go directly to the individual artist! Purchases are CASH ONLY.

You’ll also be able to find the heart-shaped and round trays created through our collaboration with The Enola Group - Burleson House. These trays are available through donation-based purchasing, with a suggested donation of $10-$20.

Adult Workshop Series: Painting Workshop

September 11 | 6PM-8PM | $61

Join TOSS as we take our painting workshop on the road to Fonta Flora Brewery in Morganton for an evening of painting and sipping!

Gláucia Mir will lead us through creating a beautiful landscape using acrylic paints. We’ll learn a little bit about color, practice mixing colors, and leave with a finished painted canvas!

Whether you’re an experienced painter or new to painting, come ready to draw a little and paint a lot! Make sure to wear clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, and bring a photo reference or two of a landscape you would like to paint!

A drink voucher will be included for all participants. Must be 21+ to purchase alcohol. Non-alcoholic drink options available.

Visiting Artist Andy Chrem just wrapped up her 2026 summer residency with TOSS! Originally from Peru and now based in Hickory, NC, Andy has more than 20 years of experience creating and teaching art, with a focus on using recycled and recyclable materials. ♻

Inspired by a dream of transforming long, winding coils into sculptural works of art, Andy collaborated with Material Return to create three sculptural vessels reflecting the past, present and her hopes for the future of the textile industry.

Her beautiful pieces are now bringing color and creativity to the TIC co-working space! Thank you, Andy, for spending your summer with us - and thank you Kat Evans (.imagery on instagram) for capturing photos of the finished pieces!
