This explosive 1966 dance poster captures the excitement and energy of Southern California’s Eastside music scene during the golden era of teen dances and live rhythm and blues shows.

Promoted by Royal Jester’s, the spectacular Pre-Easter Dance and Show featured an unforgettable lineup including soul sensation Dobie Gray performing his hit “The ‘In’ Crowd,” alongside legendary East Los Angeles favorites Thee Midniters and Lil’ Willie G. Also appearing were Thee Ambertones, Men From Sound, Exotics, Runabouts, Essents, and Impalas, bringing together some of the most influential young bands of the era.

Held at Big Union Hall in the City of Vernon on April 9, 1966, the event reflected the vibrant youth culture, community pride, and electrifying live music atmosphere that defined Eastside dances throughout the 1960s. Admission was just $2.00, drawing enthusiastic crowds from across Los Angeles for an evening of dancing, romance, and unforgettable performances.

Greetings. My name is Steven Chavez, and I am in the process of publishing a book titled, “The East Los Angeles Music Experience”. The book is near completion and is dedicated to the music and social scene in and around ELA, during the years 1960 to 1969. We will feature the bands and the Eastside Sound music that emanated from the Boyle Heights District and surrounding East Los Angeles area.
The book will feature many photos of the bands; a good collection of dance announcements and flyers; several colorful band business cards; and historic information about the concerts and music of that time.
Thank you and appreciate your support. Steven Chavez

East Los Angeles, located near downtown Los Angeles, sits at a crossroads between the surf music of the beach areas and the soulful sounds of the southside. A growing population of enthusiastic teenagers, the first generation to primarily speak English, embraced the new rock & roll music. They listened to these sounds on transistor radios and television dance shows, fueling the creation of numerous new bands. This vibrant scene drew thousands of teenagers to dance venues. The early 1960s began slowly, but momentum built rapidly, reaching its peak in 1966.

This an illustration of a few concert and dance venues.
