Kylo explored a frozen block filled with treats , Felix searched for his diet inside a hanging tire swing , and Happy interacted with a rat secured to a line in his pool! 🦨🦝🐊

From tiny squirrel monkeys to larger primates, each species has unique behaviors, adaptations, and an important role in its ecosystem. 🌎

Nothing beats a little sun!

Tilly, our Eastern box turtle, enjoyed some time soaking up the sun in our outdoor sunning enclosure, located right across from Tortoise Trail! Each day, one of our terrestrial reptiles gets the opportunity to spend time outside, enjoying natural sunlight and a change of scenery.

Today was Tilly’s turn to soak up some rays! ☀️🐢

Ring-tailed lemurs: masters of the iconic striped tail and soaking in the sun!☀️

Ring-tailed lemurs are found in Madagascar and are the most terrestrial species of lemurs. Lemurs rely heavily on olfactory communication which is why they have scent glands on the insides of their wrists and the upper part of their chests. In order to scent mark, they rub their scent glands on objects and even waft their tails upwards to assert dominance in the wild. This unique way of communicating helps them navigate their world and maintain social structures!🐵🫂

It’s Woodrow Wilson’s birthday! 🦫 Woody is one of our star ambassadors who just turned eight years old!⭐️🎊

All of our trainers at the Teaching Zoo take birthdays very seriously and ensure our animals get extra special treats that they deserve! Woody is very loved by all four of his trainers who made him an ice cake with all of his favorites, greens and yam! To celebrating with many more fun cakes, happy birthday Woody!🎂

This is Eleanor, one of two of our Vietnamese Pot-Bellied Pigs! 🐽

Eleanor recently just turned seventeen years old and in the wild, pot-bellied pigs typically only live up to ten years old. At her age, keeping active and providing room for movement is important for her health which is why her trainers take her on daily walks around the zoo! You can always tell she’s a happy pig through that wagging tail of hers!🤍🐷

Thank you for all those who came to celebrate Owl Awareness Day at the Teaching Zoo!🦉 Serena, our Great Horned Owl and Gina, our Eurasian Eagle Owl had a HOOT and hope that you did too!

Owls are vital indicators of ecosystem health. Protecting them means protecting the delicate balance of nature for all living things. By protecting owls, we safeguard not just a species, but the intricate web of life that sustains us all.🍃

Yesterday, we said goodbye to our beloved baboon, Chloe. ❤️

Chloe came to us as an adult from the Wildlife Waystation, along with her companion, Bubba. Over the years, she became a cherished teacher and ambassador for her incredible species—sharing her playful spirit, curiosity, and enthusiasm with students, guests, and everyone lucky enough to know her.

Yesterday, Chloe passed peacefully, surrounded by the people who loved her most. At the time of her passing, she was the oldest hamadryas baboon on record.

Her presence touched so many lives, and her legacy will live on in every person she helped inspire. We will miss her grunts, grooming and press more than words can express

Meet the generations at the Teaching Zoo! From 103-year-old Clarence, our Galápagos giant tortoise, to 1-year-old fennec foxes Dash & Koa, every animal deserves the best care at every stage of life.

Our zoo is fortunate to have specialized veterinary technicians who help care for our geriatric animals, supporting their health, comfort, and quality of life so they can continue thriving well into their golden years.

Because age is just a number when you have a whole team rooting for you! 🩺🐢✨ 💚
