To give our student staff time to settle back into the academic waters, we will not be hosting Open Hours or Private Tours starting August 21st. Keep an eye out for updated scheduling.

Do you like walks along the sandy ocean bottoms?

While not our most active organism, sometimes our sea anemones do get up and go for a stroll. They use their tentacles (movement shown in this video) or their base (pedal disc) to walk themselves to where they need to go. Some even twist and turn to propel themselves throw the water in a swimming motion! However, this process can be quite slow, this video had to be sped up 4.0x! 🌊

Did you know July is Shark and Ray Awareness Month?!

Here at the MSUM Oceanarium we have five Atlantic Stingrays. They love to come up and wave hello to our guests during Private Tours and Saturday Open Hours.

Are these baby starfish?

That’s a question we hear a lot! They’re actually a small species of sea star called Astrina Stars. They get to be about 3/4 of an inch wide and can reproduce via fragmentation. That’s when they split into two! So, when you see one of these tiny creatures walking around with two big arms and three tiny ones, know there’s a matching star out there that used to make up one whole star!

We may not know exactly how many of these stars are in our facility but it’s for sure more than 50!
