A lot of people in Montrose know me as the Montrose Witch and as the owner and operator of the Montrose Witch Shop. What some of you may not know is that nursing and caregiving has been a major part of my life for decades, long before the witch shop ever had a storefront.

Throughout the years that I was building and operating my witchcraft businesses, I was also working in skilled nursing facilities and private duty care, caring for people in their homes and supporting families through aging, illness, dementia, end-of-life care, and all of the everyday needs that come with keeping someone safely and comfortably at home.

In fact, my private duty work is part of the reason the original Montrose Witch Shop brick-and-mortar location became possible. At the time, I was caring full-time for a private client whose daughter believed in what I was creating. That family supported and contributed to my opening the original shop on N Townsend Ave and Main Street. In a very real way, these two parts of my life have always existed side by side.

And there is another connection between these two worlds that is deeply personal to me. I have long identified since childhood as a Death Witch, psychopomp, and death doula. A psychopomp, in spiritual traditions, is one who accompanies or guides the dying and the dead through the transition between life and death. A death doula provides presence, comfort, advocacy, and support to a dying person and the people who love them.

I don’t run from death. I never have. Where death can understandably make people uncomfortable or afraid, I am able to walk toward it and be fully present. I can sit at a bedside through the long, quiet hours. I can hold space when there is nothing left to fix. I can care for the body while respecting the person and the transition they are experiencing. I can support a frightened family, recognize changes as death approaches, and remain grounded when the room becomes difficult.

I’ve done this work throughout my life. It isn’t simply a specialty I decided to add to a list of services. It is part of who I am. I believe that is one of the things that makes me an exceptional private duty caregiver, particularly when someone is approaching the end of life. My clinical caregiving experience and my spiritual work don’t have to compete with one another. They allow me to care for the whole person with skill, dignity, compassion, and presence.

So yes, I’m still the Montrose Witch. That hasn’t changed. But I’m also a CNA, QMAP, longtime private duty caregiver, death doula, and psychopomp, and many people who know me through the witch shop may never have known about that side of my life.

Today, my private duty work has grown into EverPresent Private Care, an established local team of experienced caregivers serving Montrose, Delta, Olathe, and Ridgway.

Too often, families in Montrose County and surrounding areas suddenly find themselves needing immediate help for a loved one and the traditional care system cannot always move as quickly as the situation requires.

There are many reasons families can be left with gaps in care:

* A loved one’s condition suddenly changes and the family has no home care services established yet.
* An agency is already involved but doesn’t have enough caregivers to cover all the needed shifts.
* The client has been approved for a certain number of care hours, but their needs have increased beyond those allotted hours.
* Additional hours may be available, but authorization and approval take time.
* A family needs overnight, weekend, last minute, or emergency coverage that an existing provider cannot staff.
* Hospice or home health is involved, but those services do not provide continuous bedside caregiving around the clock.
* Families may be facing an urgent situation and simply do not have time to wait through intake, assessment, authorization, and staffing processes before someone can be there.
