n the beautiful Chapel at College Hall, on April 11 and 12, Montpelier Chamber Orchestra will present musical sentiments of spring. We invite in hope, light, blossom, and beauty to unite us through the season of mud. This spring program aims to inspire and expand our feelings of anticipation and yearning so characteristic of this time of year.

Tchaikovsky’s well known, Serenade for Strings, ventures from classical elegance to Russian folk melodies. It presents a danceable waltz, light and singable, balanced by a sad, yet painfully beautiful elegy. Like springtime itself it embraces dramatic contrasts between light and dark, pensive depth and joyful dance.

Flautist Laurel Mauer, one of Central Vermont’s musical treasures of worldwide renown, plays Dana Paul Perna’s, Songe de Voix Perdues (dream of the forgotten voices), a contemporary expression for flute and strings.

The enticement and delayed resolution of the changing seasons are encompassed in Emilie Mayer’s symphony No. 1 in cm. Mayer, oft referred to as the “female Beethoven of the 19th century.” Here unresolved chords are extended, and then give way to resolution.

Come celebrate spring along with Montpelier Chamber Orchestra. We will take you there.

The program includes Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 in G minor. This work presents an iconic and graceful melody of both darkness and light. It is softly elegant, like the promise of spring, and yet includes moments of angst and jubilation. The melody is recognizable; this is a piece that we all know and love. Next, in the vein of enhancing a longing for springtime, the orchestra will play Edvard Grieg’s, Holberg Suite, a compilation of traditional dance forms in melody and rhythm. The show will end with the Fanfare, Interlude and Finale by our own Vermont composer, Gwyneth Walker. This has elements of jazz, Latin clave and pure joy.

Performer update for our Sunday, January 19th, 4-6 pm MLK, Jr. Commemorative Concert at Lost Nation Theater at Montpelier City Hall Arts Center:

Pianist Michael Arnowitt will present a variety of classical and jazz pieces, including selections by the outstanding Black composers George Walker and Leslie Adams, and Joshua Uzoigwe’s “Ukom” from the composer’s set “Talking Drums,” music evoking the traditional drumming and singing of celebratory memorial music of southeastern Nigeria. Arnowitt will wear his jazz pianist hat to close his set with his original jazz composition “Chicago Avenue” in memory of George Floyd and a performance of “Afro Blue,” made famous by the saxophonist John Coltrane.
