Artist Statement

Born in Monticello, AR on April 10, 1996, Tonya has had a passion for creating both written and visual arts since she was a child. Tonya has practiced many art techniques primarily using pen and ink. She first began creating using graphite, but her style began to change during undergraduate-college at the University of the Ozarks. Not only does she draw, she is a painter, printmaker, and ceramicist. She also enjoys photography and graphic design.

Her art expresses common themes of isolation and escapism, realities which guided her to create art. During her childhood, she faced harsh experiences which inspired her to create art. As she documented her experiences in her diaries through writing and sketches, she learned that art allowed her to express her emotions in ways she could not speak aloud. She has always been self-reflective in her works, documenting her psychological growth. She creates art in hopes to inspire others who have faced abuseful situations.

Tonya’s greatest artistic influences come from anime, Pop-artists Roy Lichtenstein and Andy Warhol, and Surrealist Salvatore Dali. Her art was first influenced by anime tv shows that she would watch with her family. She would draw stylized characters with bold outlines. As she began to explore more artists, she stumbled upon Lichtenstein who was her greatest inspiration for her characters. Her art is combines the stylized imagery of Lichtenstein with the boldness and coloration of animated characters. Her artwork can also be characterized by her choice of colors. Tonya’s style is mostly grayscale containing one or two elements of color, preferably red. Red is a vibrant color that pops and expresses various emotions; pain, anger, love, and life.
