Art meets conservation. 🖼️🔥

Splinter Hill Bog is a protected Alabama treasure filled with rare, fire-dependent species of pitcher plants, longleaf pines, and orange fringed orchids.

Did you know Alabama has more than 130,000 miles of streams and rivers? In fact, 10% of the continental US’s freshwater sources come from Alabama waterways. Dozens of these waterways flow into the Mobile-Tensaw Delta, also known as North America’s Amazon.

These waterways not only support our lives but also many species. Alabama has the most crayfish, mussels, snails, turtles, and freshwater fish in the U.S. Over 300 native freshwater fish live in these waterways, and 40% of all North American fish species are native to Alabama.

Scientists believe Alabama’s vast biodiversity is a result of the land lacking glacier formations during the Ice Age. This allowed uninterrupted years of adaptation to Alabama’s ecosystems from the Appalachian Mountains’ Piedmont to the coastal lands of the Gulf.

Currently on display in the gallery is a selection of photographs that highlight the beauty of our waterways…and our high concentration of waterfalls!

“Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest Retrospective” is now on view until September 25!

A partnership with the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources, this exhibition showcases photographs taken by Alabamians utilizing traditional photography techniques with handheld cameras. Taken throughout Alabama between 2021 and 2025, the photographs on display placed in the annual Outdoor Alabama Photo Contest, a joint project between the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and the Alabama Tourism Department. Categories include: Alabama State Parks, Birds, Bugs, Cold-Blooded Critters, Nature-Based Recreation, Scenic, Sweet Home Alabama, Wildlife, and Young Photographer.

We had a wonderful time celebrating our 2026 honorees during a reception on May 15. Gathering for brunch, conversation, and celebration was a lovely sight to see in our gallery. Thank you to all who attended, and we hope to see you soon!

Now on view! Celebration of Alabama Arts exhibition features meaningful objects from each of our 2026 honorees' careers. This exhibition sheds light on the myriad of way these Alabamians champion the arts.

Our 2026 honorees are Debbie Bond, Gary Chapman, George Culver, Eric Essix, Ralph Frohsin Jr., Gary Waldrep, and Scott Wright. They served as co-curators for their sections, selecting items that encapsulate pivotal moments in their careers or artifacts of personal significance, which gives the viewer a behind-the-scenes look into their artistic journeys.

This exhibition is a companion to the Celebration of Alabama Arts event on Thursday, May 14 at 7:00 pm, at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival. All are welcomed to attend. To reserve a free ticket, check out the link in our bio.

The 2026 Celebration of Alabama Arts exhibition is on view now!

This year's honorees served as co-curators for their sections, selecting items that encapsulated pivotal moments in their careers or artifacts of personal significance, which gives the viewer a behind-the-scenes look into their artistic journeys.

This exhibition seeks to provide a visual record of the hard work of these individuals and to complement the awards ceremony on May 14. (Reserve your free tickets at arts.alabama.gov/celebrate)
