A somewhat arrogant-looking man… and an unusually green background.
A bold choice? Maybe. Or maybe not….
Around the time that he painted this work, Van Gogh had gas lighting installed in his studio so he and fellow artist Gauguin could work after dark. Gaslight gives off a yellow-green glow, subtly shifting the colours Vincent saw… and painted.
