DS Art DS Art is the visual humor of doctor-turned-artist Don Stewart. Don left the hospital four decades ago to draw funny pictures. It was a healthy choice.

Sketch 5: Then alluvasudden – it was done!
I really intended to take a couple of ‘ink in progress’ shots, but time down in the rabbit hole plays tricks on a guy. This design was never meant to be highly detailed. It only needed enough line work to make it show up on posters and tee shirts. Maybe the Wetland Watchers can get a coloring page out of it too.

Sketch 4: A family portrait of sorts, in case our audience wants to try this at home. Get out your #2 pencils and… GO!

Sketch 3: The rest of this swampy menagerie came together rather quickly, as though they heard there was a deadline looming and jumped in to lend a claw. The frog now shares the company of a dragonfly, anole, shrimp, and snapping turtle. A bald eagle and hawk stand guard on the sides, looming over a salamander, oyster, clam and a Gulf Fritillary, Louisiana’s state butterfly.

Up next: Ink.

Sketch 2: Pencil sketch well underway. What seemed to be a blue crab tiara quickly transformed into a broad, contented bullfrog. The crab has taken up residence down at the chin, where he’s apparently taking on all (beach) comers.

The crawfish, ducks and cottonmouth remained from the initial design impression, joined by a pair of fierce little hermit crabs for eyes. All are flanked by muscular jaws of a pelican on one side, and a roseate spoonbill on the other.
