“I was looking through my archives and found this hidden gem.

I created this tattoo back in 2022 for Christa to represent her Filipina roots and her faith.

Sometimes, the simplest creations can hold so much meaning. Salamat, Christa!”

“Thank you, Luchie, for your trust. I appreciate you making the trip all the way from Texas to get a tattoo from me.”
Reclaiming your roots and identity is a powerful journey of reconnecting with your cultural heritage, often involving rediscovery, celebration, and resistance against historical erasure.

Salamat, Katherine, for your trust.

I appreciate the time and patience you put into creating this piece, and most importantly, the story you shared with me about your grandmother’s resilience during World War II. Katherine’s grandmother endured many challenges during the Japanese occupation just so her family could survive.
World War II in the Philippines was one of the most brutal periods for Filipinos, as our country suffered through the intense brutality of the Japanese forces. The Battle of Manila was one of the most intense conflicts of the war, yet it is rarely discussed compared to the war against the N***s in Europe.
Manila was flattened and left in rubble; many of our historic sites and records were lost or destroyed due to the intense fighting and the American air campaigns. For Katherine’s grandmother, survival was the only option.

Thank you so much, Katherine. I truly enjoyed our sessions and the marathon of Kung Fu movies we watched. While my practice of Filipino tattooing may not involve traditional rituals, prayers, or offerings to the ancestors, that first session felt special—I am certain we both felt her Lola’s presence with us.

To the clients I truly connect with, like Katherine: I want you to know that I always feel a bit sad when a piece is finished because I’ll miss our time and conversations. I hope to see you all again someday.

Maraming salamat sa inyong lahat

Salamat, Jonas, sa iyong pagtitiwala.

Jonas visited me to receive a Filipino tattoo in honor of his late father, who was a musician in a traditional kulintang ensemble. Kulintang is a central element of Filipino identity, particularly in Mindanao, and is traditionally performed with graceful, fluid movements. This tattoo ensures that his father’s passion for music continues to live on.

Thank you for your time and endurance throughout the process of completing this half-sleeve, Jonas. 🙏🏽
