As I've gotten older it has become easier and easier to accept my own limitations in life. This is true of my music life as well. There were several points during production when I had to make a choice between attempting to play a part myself or calling in another artist, and I'm sure glad someone tipped me off to David Michael Weiss, who clearly has "that telecaster thing" down.

I'm also highlighting the wonderful and talented Sarah LeMieux , whose backing vocal tracks add SO much to the tune.

Track 1, "When the Long Day Ends", introduced the idea of simple, humble, respectul, equitable companionship and "Long4U" continues with that. In fact, much of the album hopes to eschew the long-outdated patriarchal ideas of ownership and control as pertains to romantic partnerships.

"I don't need a promise and I don't want forever - I just want to be here when you want me to be here".

Concerning this song, I would like to highlight my friend, musical accomplice and drummer, Maplewood's own Steven Feldman.

I believe I first saw Steven perform with Marry the Sea and was impressed with his sensitivity and the way he humbly served and supported their wonderful songs. I call attention to him on this song for that same strength of character and, on a personal note, I thank him for his genuine enthusiasm and support of me and my (often) quirky compositions.

I suppose I start the album with this song because it hits on a prevailing theme -- the yearning for uncomplicated and earnest partnership. I seem to be good at only a few things, musically -- songs that bemoan the fate of civilization [See: Scenes from the Coastal Evacuation] and what I call "Old Man Love Songs". As the song says, "I've given up on trying to save the world from the hands of evil, greedy men". If QWERT's Book of M is a collection of Old Man Love Songs, "When the Long Day Ends" sets the tone.

DOC MILLS and the Knife River Revival

Time for the next thing! Going forward, Doc and Chris will be hosting a seasonal monthly songwriter's circle at the world-famous Kraken Lounge (Doc's house). These events will be outdoor and invitation only. We figure we can get two in before the weather turns. We will ask invited players to bring a friend who is also a player, and will guarantee a minimum of three songs to everyone. If you are interested, comment here or send us a DM to the TCOAOM page with your contact info. First run is 9-17.

Friends: Regretfully, it seems our little open mic will not be back for the fall after all. We have enjoyed hosting you these last few years, and really want to thank you for contributing to the kind of open mic we always wanted to play at ourselves.
