🎶🎒What a day at JAZZ HOUSE Goes to High School!

At the inaugural JAZZ HOUSE Goes to High School, Jennifer Grantham, our Director of JAZZ HOUSE NYC, led a discussion with a group of parents and middle school students about what to expect and how to prepare for auditions for specialized arts high school in New York City.
The discussion also included our Student Ambassadors, Luna, Justin, and Jade, sharing their perspectives and experiences when they went thorugh this process themselves.
This initiative will continue throughout the fall by offering students a place to not only prepare their audition, but to record it!

Thank you to Trinity Church NYC and every family who came out! We’re so proud of these young musicians and can’t wait to cheer them on as they head into their auditions!

🏠🎼 Our 25th anniversary celebration continues, and today we’re looking back at where it all began.

In 1999, Newark jazz station WBGO asked our founder, Melissa Walker, to create a program introducing children to jazz. She handed her students “tool belts” of musical skills and invited them to build a “JAZZ HOUSE” together.

In 2002, that mission became JAZZ HOUSE KiDS, a nonprofit built on the belief that every young person deserves the chance to discover their own musical creativity and learn about the rich cultural legacy of jazz.

Over the next decade, we brought education programs, teaching artists, vocal residencies, and masterclasses into schools, and from there our organization continued to grow. Swipe through our early years to see where it all began!

🎷🎹 One week away! Jazz at One welcomes saxophonist Tia Fuller and pianist Shamie Royston to Trinity Church NYC on October 14th at 1pm.

Tia Fuller is celebrated for her soulful compositions, and Shamie Royston is known for her technical skill and expressive range. Together, they open our Jazz at One season with a midday set you won’t want to miss!

Jazz at One is curated by our very own Ted Chubb and in collaboration with Trinity Church NYC.

🏫🎶🎷 We’re taking jazz beyond our Montclair and New York City campuses and bringing it directly into classrooms across New Jersey and New York!

Through the JAZZ HOUSE Music Scholars Program, our professional teaching artists partner with public and charter schools to provide high-quality jazz education and ensemble instruction. Students build musical skills while strengthening confidence, creativity, collaboration, emotional well-being and academic growth.

We currently serve students at John F. Kennedy School, Arts High School, and Link Community Charter School in Newark, NJ, Chessie Dentley Roberts Academy and Elizabeth High School in Elizabeth, NJ, and Dr. Lena Edwards Academic Charter School in Jersey City, NJ.

Behind every class, concert and residency is a dedicated team of JAZZ HOUSE teaching artists and staff helping students discover their voices—on the bandstand and beyond!

As a nonprofit, we rely on community support to keep these programs in schools. Your gift to JAZZ HOUSE KiDS helps put instruments in students’ hands and gives young people a place to be heard. Donate today at jazzhousekids.org/donate or through the link in bio!

🎷 It’s back to school at JAZZ HOUSE Montclair and JAZZ HOUSE NYC!

Our JAZZ HOUSE Big Band is hard at work after returning from the Monterey Jazz Festival last week, bringing that west coast energy right back into the rehearsal room. Students also sat down for a listening session with Nathan Eklund on the life and music of Charles Mingus, a reminder that studying the music and the history behind it go hand in hand here at the JAZZ HOUSE.
Our adult classes and vocal ensembles kept the building humming, with new harmonies taking shape all weekend long. Over at our New York City campus at Trinity Church, the Roots of Improv Ensemble, Unity Jazz Ensemble, and more JAZZ HOUSE NYC classes are going strong.

We are so happy to welcome our students back for another year of growth, music, and community at both campuses. Here’s to a fantastic year ahead!

🎷 Throwback to the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL!
The Basin Street Collective brought “Caravan” to life with a mashup twist, weaving in “Livin’ La Vida Loca” for a performance that was as fun as it was musically sharp.

This group, directed by Ed Palermo, worked incredibly hard during our annual Summer Workshop to put this set together, and it all came together on the JAZZ HOUSE Stage during the 17th Annual MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL. Moments like these are exactly what JAZZ HOUSE KiDS is all about, meeting students wherever they are and giving them the freedom to explore, experiment, and make the music their own.

Behind every performance like this is hands-on, attentive instruction in theory, musicality, and real-world stage experience, the kind of guidance that helps a musician grow from learning the fundamentals to confidently putting their sound out in the world on a stage.

🎸 Sunday at the Monterey Jazz Festival for our JAZZ HOUSE Big Band!

The day kicked off with some fun beach time, sand, and a well-earned break before heading back to the festival grounds. From there, students caught an incredible performance from Charles Lloyd, followed by a set that needs no introduction: Herbie Hancock and Ron Carter sharing the stage together.

Getting to witness legends like these perform live is the kind of experience that stays with a young musician forever. What a way to close out an unforgettable weekend!
