s in-school and out-of-school programs, the JAZZ HOUSE helps young people gain an artistic edge through music, mentoring, education and apprenticeship, building thriving communities, and fostering community leaders and global citizens. The organization’s far-reaching cultural signature program is the award-winning MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL, the largest free jazz festival in the NYC area, attracting more than 35,000 attendees to downtown Montclair each year.

Day 2 of the JAZZ HOUSE Summer Workshop at Montclair State University was filled with music and creativity! Students participated in programs that challenged their skills and introduced new ways to collaborate. With support from our incredible faculty and guest artists, they gained valuable experience both individually and as an ensemble.

The powerful young female instrumentalists of the CHiCA POWER Big Band took the stage for the second time at the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL this year! Directed by Ingrid Jensen, they performed music inspired by the women who helped shape jazz.

The Sonny Rollins Saxophone Ensemble, featuring an all-saxophone cohort, celebrated the life and legacy of one of jazz’s most distinctive and influential tenor saxophonists. 🎷✨

Born in Manhattan in 1930, Sonny Rollins began playing saxophone at just eight years old and went on to record hundreds of albums, including classics like Saxophone Colossus, The Bridge, and Freedom Suite.

Directed for the first time by JAZZ HOUSE alum Alex Laurenzi, these young musicians proudly carried that legacy onto the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL stage. We could not be prouder! 💛

Our award-winning JAZZ HOUSE BIG BAND brings together some of our most talented and experienced young musicians. After practicing over the course of a two week intesive summer workshop, they opened the MONTCLAIR JAZZ FESTIVAL alongside the incredible Ingrid Jensen. 🎷✨

In addition to this performance, they are now preparing for their first-ever performance at the Monterey Jazz Festival on September 25th and 26th. We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with United Airlines in flying our students to the festival. 💛🎶

Young musicians ages 12–18 are invited to learn, grow, and find their sound through weekly ensembles, improvisation, vocal classes, masterclasses, jam sessions, performance opportunities, and more. From beginners taking their first steps in jazz to advanced students preparing for college music programs, there is a place for everyone at the JAZZ HOUSE.
