That's how long the passengers initially waited on the planes in Gander before they were allowed to leave.

Think about that for a minute.

Five hours.

On a plane.

Not knowing exactly what was happening or when you'd be going anywhere.

And then the doors opened.

And the people of Gander were waiting.

Newfoundland has some fantastic expressions.

For example, “God love your cotton socks” is a way of saying thank you.

And “I'm gutfoundered” means you're hungry.

Honestly, we're already considering adopting that one. 😂

One of the things we love about Come From Away is that these aren't fictional characters who were dreamed up for a musical.

They're based on real people.

The writers spent a month in Gander in 2011 talking to the people who were actually there—locals, passengers, pilots and crew members.

They came home with thousands of stories.

This cast and crew are lucky enough to get to tell a few of them.

You don't know what's happening. You don't know when you're going home. And then you find out you've been diverted to a place you've probably never heard of.

That's how the story of Come From Away begins.

We all know what happened on September 11, 2001.

But Come From Away tells us about what happened next.

When U.S. airspace closed, 38 planes were diverted to Gander, Newfoundland. Suddenly, a town of about 10,000 people was caring for more than 6,500 unexpected visitors.

And somehow, in the middle of all that uncertainty, something beautiful happened.

This is that story.
