A 13-year-old fan named Margaret Ashworth is the reason a good chunk of the Beatles' BBC recordings, including "Ooh! My Soul," survived at all. The BBC routinely bulk-erased its own tapes back then, but Margaret used her father's modified VHF radio setup to capture the broadcasts directly, far clearer than anyone holding a microphone up to a speaker. ποΈ The Beatles recorded this Little Richard cover on August 1, 1963, with Paul McCartney on lead vocal, doing his best impression of Richard's screaming delivery. Decades later, when EMI was trying to compile Live at the BBC, Margaret's tapes, stored in her parents' loft for 29 years, blew away the label's own best copies in a side-by-side test at Abbey Road.
