There go those Bearcats again.

Ruston’s (5-1; 1-0) offense was too much for the Ouachita Lions (3-3; 0-1) to handle in a rematch of the 2025 state championship. The Bearcats got some retribution by scoring eight touchdowns through their nine drives against the defending champs, besting the Lions 56-21.

After leading by just a touchdown midway through the second half, the Bearcats’ lead ballooned, scoring 21 unanswered to close out the first half. The final score from the Lions came in the final minute of the third quarter.

Ruston continues 2-5A district play next week with the Peabody Warhorses (2-4; 0-1) heading to the Hoss.

Ouachita’s chance to even its district record comes at home next week, welcoming a West Monroe Rebel team (3-3; 0-1) that was blown out by 37 points in its most recent contest.

FOOTBALL | Franklin vs Wossman
You’re not seeing double and that’s not an error on our end—Conner Linder housed TWO interceptions for touchdowns in ONE quarter.

Bad things happen when you throw Linder’s way, but the Franklin Parish (5-1; 1-0) offense was plenty potent in the Patriots’ 55-30 homecoming victory over the Wossman Wildcats (3-3; 0-1).

It was another night at the office for one of the Boot’s best rushing attacks. Trey Martin and DJ Neal are an electrifying pair of backs.

The Patriots have a tall task next week as they take on a well-rested Neville team (4-1; 0-0) awaiting its start to district play.

Wossman gets its chance to get a win in the district as they host West Ouachita (1-5; 0-1) next week.

It’s physical. It’s for Ouachita Parish bragging rights. It’s never easy. It’s a rivalry dating back over 70 years, and the latest installment of West Monroe versus Neville delivered as much suspense as advertised.

Both defenses stood up to the test, but an early field goal and a third-quarter rushing touchdown from Jarvis Blackston, 20 yards out, proved to be all the Neville Tigers (4-1) needed to take their fourth game in a row, ending 10-0 in their favor over the visiting West Monroe Rebels (3-2).

The 10 total points scored is the fewest in the series since 1970 (6-0 Neville), and this game was also the first time the Tigers have shut out the Rebels since 1991 (26-0).

The Rebels have another big test next week as they travel to face ASH (4-1) to begin their district slate.

Meanwhile, Neville gets a week off next weekend. The Tigers get to begin District 2-4A on Oct. 16 at Bill Ruple Stadium against the Franklin Parish Patriots (4-1).

Sterlington and Oak Grove are two football programs unaccustomed to dropping consecutive games, so something had to give in Friday night’s meeting.

The Panthers (3-2) look like they haven’t missed a step as they right the course of their season, taking a major 57-34 win over the Tigers (1-4) to win the Battle on Hwy 2. After trading early scores, the Panthers jumped out and built a lead as large as 39 at one point.

Sterlington opens district play next week, welcoming in Loyola Prep (3-2) from Shreveport, while Oak Grove’s four-game skid puts the Tigers in unfamiliar territory. The Tigers return to the Grove next week to face district opponent Richwood (3-2).

Don’t look now, but the Neville Tigers have won three in a row against 5A opponents.

The Tigers (3-1) stood their ground at Bill Ruple Stadium against another former division rival. This time, they ended ASH’s undefeated streak to drop the Trojans to 3-1.

This matchup featured no shortage of offense, but the biggest score of the night came when the Tigers’ Denim Nelson housed a 35-yard pick-6 off a blocked pass by defensive end Dillon Rob to put Neville up 38-21 in the 4th quarter.

Neville sees another familiar opponent next week as they host the West Monroe Rebels (3-1), who won a thriller over Central on Friday.

If you found yourself anywhere else besides Lions Stadium on Friday, then you missed out on the most dramatic game of the week in the area.

The Ouachita Lions (3-1) pulled out some homecoming heroics to break away from the Sterlington Panthers (2-2) behind an opportunistic defensive performance.

The Panthers built some lengthy drives, but the Lions came away with multiple turnovers to prevent Sterlington from sniffing the league.

Ouachita regains its momentum with a matchup against Central (2-2), who found itself on the wrong side of an overtime game. Meanwhile, Sterlington heads to Oak Grove to take on the Tigers (1-3).
