This deck transformation is nearly complete. The Cumaru hardwood decking makes a strong and beautiful deck for enjoying the great outdoors. A Brazilian hardwood, Cumaru is 3 times harder than oak, has no knots, and is naturally pest and rot resistant. The decking is installed with stainless steel screws for longevity, and they will not rust and stain the wood. Generous spacing was left between the decking boards for drainage, air flow, and to minimize build up of debris in the gaps. I will put a coat of oil on the deck in about a week to preserve the warm reddish brown color, otherwise it take on a nice silver gray patina. Cumaru does not need repeated sealing or staining, like the commonly used, natural wood decking materials. This makes a great low maintenance solution, and saves money down the road.
Unfortunately the original builder of this deck (less than 10 years ago) took many shortcuts and made several catastrophic mistakes that led to an early demise. No spacing was left between the decking boards, and while the pressure treated lumber was still wet, the entire deck was sealed/stained on the top side only. No moisture barrier was installed below the deck, and the combination of these three mistakes caused the boards to rot internally. Much of the framing needed to be replaced as well. The joists were supported by ledger boards rather than the proper modern hardware. The ledges trapped water and rotted, as did over half of the floor joists. I replaced all of the stair stringers and all of the bad joists, and repaired some areas in the band. This time, I properly installed joist hangers and corner hardware to bring the work up to code. I also removed all vegetation from underneath the deck and installed a plastic moisture barrier to prevent cupping and warping of the decking and to minimize potential future wood rot of the framing. This deck is a perfect example of why manufacturers recommended installation practices should be followed, in order to get the maximum life out of your investment.
Contact Land Whisperer for your deck design, installation or renovation needs. DM to discuss how to get started with your project. 😎

A permanent solution to this condemned pressure treated stairs and deck. These stairs and deck were built (poorly) within the last ten years, by a local General Contractor. This Cumaru decking will likely be around for decades to come. A Brazilian hardwood, Cumaru is naturally rot and pest resistant, it requires minimal maintenance compared to traditional materials. It is also beautiful and offers a variety of grain patterns and has no knots. I only wish that I had built this deck myself originally, and known about this long lasting wood option. Thanks, Athens Unique Lumber and Custom Woodworks for the heads up on this material.

Before and after shots.
I removed the sway back 2x6's, and built live edge cedar slab tables between the porch posts. This is the third phase of functional outdoor accoutrements that Land Whisperer has created for this lovely home set in the woods. This was a very fun job, and it always a pleasure using purposefully cut, locally sawn wood.

An 'Owl Tree Totem'. I carved this standing piece, from a massive Eucalyptus trunk. It was created for a client outside of Athens, and it features 5 different species of owls.
I would love to discuss any ideas that you may have about putting some more art in your life. It is always rewarding to take a concept and bring it to life.

I would like to give a shout out to the Professor of Useless Knowledge. Larry suffered a stroke on the very day that he stopped by to introduce himself to me, while I was downtown carving. One week ago, he fell and was hospitalized, where he was diagnosed with having had a stroke. Yesterday, he returned to his daily morning radio spot and described the event. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family at this difficult time. We look forward to hearing you back on the air next week. I am coming to make you that green bottle tree. 😎

Debarking day. This Red Cedar is fresh off the sawmill and ready to work into a series of outdoor tables. These slabs will complete phase 3 of an outgoing cedar project, rooting a wondeful home to the beautiful woods outside Monroe, Georgia. Much to do.
