One of the best men I've ever known passed away today.
Gregory A. Bergenske and I first met in second grade at the bus stop near our homes over 62 years ago. Since then we played together, worked together, and got in trouble together. Greg used to joke that if one of us got spanked, the other one got spanked too because our moms knew we were both in on it.
We were in St. Dennis Boy Scout Troop 149 together and, when the time came for me to get married, he was the best man at my wedding. Ever since that day he never once missed sending Mary and me an anniversary card, Christmas card or birthday card. Never once! I wish I could say the same.
Greg passed away quietly in his car after having attended mass at his parish in Janesville.
My sincere condolences to his lovely wife, Yvonne, his brilliant son, Nick, and Nick's amazing wife, Caroline. My heart also goes out to his big brother, Mike and his extended family.
We shall not see his like again. Godspeed my friend.
