Bugs and Botanicals and Butterflies was a busy week!

We apologize for not posting daily updates - our photographer Miss Heather, is on maternity leave! (picture of Miss Heather and Magnolia in first comment).

We spent a lot of time indulging in Impressionism, using long brushstrokes, and pointillism to create masterpieces. We played around with parts of color theory.

We built our knowledge of mediums exploring with watercolors, tempera paint, and acrylic paint. We studied artists Van Gogh, O'Keefe, Seraut, and more.

We learned the parts of a beetle and using our knowledge we created our own stamps, and color theory doodle-bugs.

On our last day, we went for an adventure on the trail behind Cumston Hall, upending rocks, and sticks to build fairy houses. Thanks to the Monmouth Trails Committee and Dennis A. Price for creating a fun little place to explore, right in our own backyard!

We didn't take many pictures today because we were busy, busy, busy!

After reading two different versions of Jack and the Beanstalk and identifying the common parts that make it a fairytale, such as magical creatures, the number three, Giants, and a moral lesson. We made our own magic beans, and painted some beanstalks.

We learned about Paul Klee, and examined his use of shapes and complementary colors to paint amazing things.

We mixed primary colors to create secondary colors. We talked about hot versus cold, complementary, and analogous colors.
Using Klee as inspiration we stamped our own castles using duplos and sponges in acrylic paint.

We will assemble beanstalk mobiles tomorrow!

We finished off the day watercoloring vague shapes to create the beginnings of a stained glass window in reference to Beauty and the Beast.

Wednesdays are always wonderful!

After finishing our royal portraits, assembling Goldilocks and her 3 bears, and adding finishing touches on our magic wands, artists had freedom to explore crafting supplies, games, and books.

We will show off our personal creative endeavors Friday! 👀

Tuesday at Fairy Tale art camp was all about texture!

After reading two different versions of Goldilocks and the three bears , we painted three bears using different tools to create implied texture and then gave Goldilocks her curls using real texture (curled paper or yellow yarn).

We had fun creating puppets and our own short puppet show telling of the story (video in first comment ).

During the second half of our morning we looked at many different portraits of royalty, and also our artists' self portraits. We talked about what the portraits told us about the person pictured, the different items that were included, their clothes, etc.

Miss Emily demonstrated the proper proportions of drawing a human face, along with the rule of thirds, and we all had practice drawing proportional faces in our sketch books before beginning our own royal portrait. We painted right until parents came!

Monday's Fair Tales were full of perspective, patterns, and storytelling!

After decorating our sketchbooks, we discussed what fairy tales are, their common themes and elements: talking animals, kings/queens, evil stepmothers, the number 3, magic, a moral lesson, good vs evil, and the woods.

We read a book about perspective - and spoke about the idea that others' see and interpret the world differently and talked about how our own perspectives impact how we make art.

We decorated stars for magic wands

We practiced patterns, rotating colors and lines around a big castle drawing.

After snack, we read a variation of Little Red Riding hood (we are trying to read as many different versions of these stories, as possible.)

We reviewed landscapes and their 3 parts, before creating a patterned landscape of Little Red Riding Hood.
