A phrase you’ll always hear a Fighting Scot say is “the bagpipes will always call you home”. It is because of past music department chair, Heimo “Hal” Loya, that the bagpipes began at Monmouth College 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿.

He wanted to encapsulate the Scottish history of the college, and asked two students/siblings Floyd & Dave Hershberger to learn and play the bagpipes with him.

He was known as “Today’s Personality” and served as the head of the music department for 20 years. He was a strings teacher, Director of Orchestra & Bands, several choral groups, church choirs, the Monmouth Municipal Band, and taught mathematics & navigation in Naval Flight Preparatory School on campus during WWII. He also started the Pi Alpha Nu musical fraternity on campus before retiring in 1973.

Our beloved Dahl Chapel was designed by alumni Dan Everett Waid and dedicated to the college in 1897. In the 1980’s, $3.3 million dollars was spent to transform the space we love so well today as the Kasch Performance Hall.

Rehearsal rooms were added in the basement that once were the locker facilities and baths for the gymnasium formerly located to the north of the building (picture #2). ⛹🏻‍♀️

You can come see this beautiful space for yourself at our Christmas at Monmouth Concert in December!

MC Marching Band uniforms through the years 📸 🥁

Our uniforms have developed quite a lot over the years. Our latest ones were purchased when Stephen Richter was the MB conductor and they definitely emulate what a fighting Scot is! You can come see these fantastic uniforms during the marching bands final performance of the season tomorrow!

Yesterday, Monmouth College had the privilege of hosting their first high school honor band. Students, from six different high schools, had one day to prepare multiple pieces to later be performed to an audience that night.

Throughout the day, students worked with Professor Swearinger through warm ups, practicing music, eating lots of pizza, and some students gave their try at conducting!

We loved having them and can’t wait to make this an annual event for many years to come!

Thank you to Professor Swearinger and our Wind Ensemble student volunteers for making this day extra special for our honor band.

“I like a wind ensemble because it’s like a bag of skittles” -Roy Magnuson

We couldn’t have summed up our time with Dr. Magnuson any better! Today, MC Wind Ensemble students had the opportunity to work alongside Dr. Magnuson to work on his piece “Innsmouth, Massachusetts - 1927” for our upcoming concert. We were able to ask questions about the music and learn more about Dr. Magnuson himself!

Huge thank you to Dr. Magnuson for coming out and helping us improve as musicians!

Did you know that the “Monmouth College Wind Ensemble” was not officially formed and named until 2001?

Monmouth first started with voice and piano lessons two years after the college officially opened in 1853. Many groups and instruments have happened since then, and this has lead us to the Wind Ensemble that we love so dearly today!

As many of you may have heard, the Fighting Scots Marching Band Fall 2020 season was recently cancelled due to the suspension of all fall sports until Dec. 31st by the Midwest Athletic Conference.

However, all other musical ensembles at Monmouth College currently plan to move forward during Fall 2020, although many of them in very revised formats in order to meet social distancing and safety regulations put in place by the college, and safety recommendations made by various musical organizations based on recent research.

Each ensemble has different plans in place based upon its size, rehearsal space, etc. Students and parents who have questions or concerns should direct their inquiries to the director of the specific ensemble in which they plan to participate.
