The city of Monett is in need of an updated skatepark. We have seen a surge in local skateboarders putting this park to good use. They’re joined by many who travel throughout Missouri, Arkansas, and Oklahoma to see kind of facilities Monett has to offer.
It is to the detriment of our community that the current skatepark has deteriorated over the years. The quality of the wood and skatelite surfaces of the existing ramps has been damaged due to weather, creating a less-than-favorable experience to those trying to use them. If this wasn’t disappointing enough, those using the park later in the evening are unable to because the lights no longer work properly. This issue has been present for over a year, cutting down on the available park time.
The clear solution to this issue is the construction of a new concrete skatepark. Concrete will not only be more durable than the current surfaces, but will be easier for the city to maintain. The added benefits of quality facilities will include an improved image for our city, a higher probability of increased/continued use of the park, and less need to travel outside of town to find a safer skatepark for our youth.
The desire to skateboard, bike, roller blade, or scooter safely shouldn’t be limited by the ability to do it locally. This group is just the start of spreading the word to those who are in support of a new skatepark for Monett. As a place to share about city meetings, fundraising efforts, or possible grant funding, this group is the best start that we can give to making this become a reality.
With skateboarding and BMX receiving recognition as Olympic sports, now more than ever we need to be encouraging our youth to be spending time outside, exercising, and choosing activities which will be beneficial to their health and wellness. It is time we step up and provide a quality skatepark to our children, our community, and the future generations that will be skating this local park for years to come!
