Hurricane update!

Things are getting a little back to normal and the animals have enjoyed the ac, heat lamps and pads on, and some fun leafy enrichment ❄️☀️🍂

We are trying to get back to conducting tours regularly but there are still lots of big branches by check in and tortoises.

End of day 5 (Tuesday) after hurricane Isaias

The sanctuary is looking better and our power came on around 6pm!!!!! 👏👏👏

We got lots done today. Tommy fixed the tortoise enclosure and we were able to get a lot of clean up and burning done.

Huge shout out to zookeepers Elba and Lauren. They came in this afternoon to help me and give me a much needed break. I sometimes forget I’m only 3 months postpartum. Elba’s daughter and husband even came today to help with clean up.

Another huge shout out to the amazing lineman who are working tirelessly to help restore power. They are so greatly appreciated 💖🫶🏼✨🌀

I hope everyone else is doing well too. I will post more updates as we continue to clean up and prepare for on property encounters again.

Unfortunate outcome for this amazing event 😔

Unfortunately due to damage sustained from Hurricane Isaias we will have to cancel our “Night of Creepy Crawlies!” Don’t worry the building and the animals are just fine. But we have a maze of close to 100 trees down as well as snapped power poles, main breaker is a twisted mess, and downed power lines. Hope to see you in the spring!

End of day 4 (Monday) after hurricane Isaias.

Still no power but at least our boil notice is over so I was able change and clean everyone’s waters. So that felt super good. Zookeeper Lauren came in for a few hours today to help out. I’m so grateful to her for coming and helping me with the animals because we were able to get a lot done. We got all of the crates scrubbed from the animals being inside on Friday. Gathered a bunch of laundry because of course my cat went outside, ate some grass and then decided to come back inside and puke on my bed so now we’re on the hunt for an open laundromat. Sorry I’ve been a little quiet the last few days. I’m just trying to focus on my animals and my family. End of day on Sunday after hurricane Isaias 🌀

We are honestly exhausted and didn’t get a ton done. The tortoises are back out even with the roof damaged. We just need to replace one board and it should be fixed. All animals are fed and happy with some light cleaning done. Our boil water notice lifted around 5:30pm so we can clean and give all animal fresh waters tomorrow.

At this time, Sunset Wildlife Connection will be closed for on property encounters. We can still provide mobile petting zoos and zoo-to-you encounters starting tomorrow.

We had Oakview Grange friends back out to help break some more of the big problem trees. We are so grateful to them and all their help!
