Buona Festa della Mamma!!
Happy Mother's Day!

Something to underline to improve our knowledge of the Italian language.

In the Italian language we have two very different verbs that we use to translate the verb “to love.”
One is “amare” and the other is “voler bene”.
The verb amare is just used between wife and husband, girlfriend and boyfriend, two persons that have a romantic relationship. I love you in this case is translated in Ti amo. I can say ti amo to my husband, but not to my sister because the verb amare implies passion.
When I want to express a feeling of care, I say Ti voglio bene, I care about you, like I would say to a mother, a friend, a relative. The expression ti voglio bene describes a very innocent kind of affection, not driven by any kind of sexual desire.
So, there is a fundamental difference between these two expressions and are used in different contexts.
