California Wildflower Spotlight: Miner's Lettuce

Claytonia perfoliata is also known as winter purslane, spring beauty, or indian lettuce. The native Ohlone people call it Rooreh.

This edible annual herb is native to a large part of western North America, including almost every county in California.

The common name (miner’s lettuce) goes back to the California Gold Rush. Gold miners needed a source of vitamin C to prevent scurvy and they learned from the Native Americans that this wild edible plant was an excellent source.
