Due to a potential hurricane this weekend, our Season Opener will be rescheduled! We are working with the Saenger to reschedule our Spectacular season opener and will announce a new date soon!

-The weather may be much better by performance time on Saturday, but our rehearsals start on Thursday. We must consider the safety of our musicians, their travel and the availability of the Saenger.

-If you have a ticket to this concert, you will automatically be issued a ticket for the new date!

-We'll let you know as soon as a new date is set.

-The concert programming will remain unchanged and deliver the same Spectacular experience you expect.

-Thank you for your understanding, and we look forward to seeing you next month at Beethoven & Blue Jeans!

A concert preview from Music Director Scott Speck:

"Three vivid musical canvases launch the Mobile Symphony’s season with spectacular colors, as we celebrate the connection between the visual and musical arts. Berlioz depicts a wild Mardi Gras celebration during the lifetime of Renaissance sculptor Benvenuto Cellini.

Our former Composer-in-Residence Kenji Bunch brings the bold cartoon imagery of Pop art to life in a contemporary masterpiece inspired by the paintings of Roy Lichtenstein. And Mussorgsky/Ravel’s Pictures at an Exhibition portrays the whimsical, fantastical, sometimes monstrous creations of artist Viktor Hartmann. Together these works highlight the power of music to paint pictures with the limitless palette of the modern symphony orchestra.”

We Feature a Symphony by our former Composer-in-Residence Kenji Bunch THIS WEEKEND!

Kenji Bunch is familiar to many of you. He was one of three composers-in-residence who produced commissioned works for the MSO in 2005-2006. Bunch, along with Kevin Puts and Mason Bates, has built an impressive career. We are proud to be associated with such amazing talents. In 2008 we premiered his Symphony No. 2 "Jubilee," commissioned to celebrate the unique beauty of the Mobile Bay area. This season, we include his First Symphony.

His Symphony No. 1, “Lichtenstein Triptych”, completed in the early 2000s, takes its cue from the bold visual world of American Pop artist Roy Lichtenstein: hard-edged color, comic-book immediacy, sharply framed gesture, and dramatic contrasts of scale. Rather than translating paintings into sound literally, Bunch responds to their graphic energy. The symphony unfolds in three movements – Varoom!, We Rose Up Slowly..., and In the Car – each reflecting the heightened atmosphere of a different Lichtenstein image.

Join us Saturday at 7:30 PM or Sunday ay 2:30 PM to hear this thrilling Symphony!
