is a 501(c)(3), tax-exempt non-profit organization whose mission is to culturally enrich the community by producing opera and other musical productions of the highest quality while cultivating emerging artists and developing new audiences through education programs across the Gulf Coast region. It is the oldest performing arts organization in the State of Alabama and the 12th oldest opera company in the nation.

Paul Houghtaling, Stage Director / Duke

Bass-baritone and stage director Paul Houghtaling has performed throughout the U.S. and abroad. Career highlights include Papageno in Die Zauberflöte with Teatro Lirico d'Europa; a debut with the Bard Festival in Haydn’s L’Infedeltá Delusa; “Meet the Artists” series at Lincoln Center; a debut with Central City Opera as the comic lead in Friml’s Rose Marie; works of Bach with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s “Bach Cantatas in Context” Series, Boston Baroque, and others; the Laughing Sun in the premiere of Glass’s The Witches of Venice; Pali in Der Zigeunerbaron with the New York Philharmonic; acclaimed Gilbert & Sullivan interpretations with the Anchorage, Cedar Rapids, Central City, First Coast, Knoxville, Mississippi, Nashville and Saratoga Operas; additional appearances with Boston Lyric, Baltimore, Des Moines, Marble City, Las Vegas, Natchez, Santa Fe, Tacoma Operas, Metropolitan Opera Guild. Recent roles include Alfred P. Doolittle in My Fair Lady with Union Avenue Opera. He is Director of Opera at the University of Alabama.

Gregory Buchalter, Conductor

Gregory Buchalter currently holds the title of Music Director and Conductor of both Varna International and Vero Beach Opera and is in high demand as a guest conductor throughout the world. He has received rave reviews for his frequent appearances at the Florida Grand Opera. He regularly conducts the South Florida Symphony and has made recent appearances with Teatro Lirica D'europa, the Vienna Summer Music Festival, Opera Orlando and the New England Conservatory of Music. Internationally, Maestro Buchalter made his debut with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra with the Mozart Requiem earlier this year and has conducted Salome at the Savonlinna Opera Festival, Die Fledermaus at the Vienna Volksoper, Mozart’s Entführung aus dem Serail at the Spoleto Festival, Cosi fan Tutte with the Mediterranean Opera Festival in Italy, Eugene Onegin with the New Opera World Festival in Moscow, Don Giovanni in Belgrade and many operas at Varna International including the Bulgarian premieres of Candide and Kurt Weil's Street Scene.

The stage is almost set, and it’s time to meet the incredible artists bringing Romeo and Juliet to life! Follow along each day as we introduce you to the talented voices you’ll soon see—and hear—on the Mobile Opera stage.

Charles Calotta, Romeo

Tenor Charles Calotta is known for his luminous voice and compelling stage presence. His 2026 engagements include Rinuccio in Gianni Schicchi with Knoxville Opera, Nemorino in L’elisir d’amore at Union Avenue Opera, a return to Mobile Opera for a role debut as Roméo in Roméo et Juliette and Tulsa Opera for Laurie in Little Women. The artist also debuted the Liverpool Oratorio with Eugene Concert Choir. In 2027 he sings his first Rodolfo in La bohème with Anchorage Opera and returns to Annapolis opera for the Duke of Mantua in Rigoletto. In 2025 Charles premiered Shell Shaker, the first opera in the Chickasaw language, with Mt. Holyoke Symphony, sang White Raven, Black Dove with White Snake Projects, All is Calm at Opera Steamboat, Diego de la Vega in Héctor Armienta’s opera Zorro at Opera San Jose, Freddie in My Fair Lady with Union Avenue Opera and Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni with the Annapolis Opera.In 2024 Charles returned to Opera Neo as Grimoaldo in Rodelinda and Ferrando in Così fan tutte. He performed Curzio in Le nozze di Figaro with Sacramento Opera and Laurie in Little Women at Fort Worth Opera, as well as Narraboth in Salome at National Sawdust. Notable performances include appearances with Florida Grand Opera, Opera North, and the Maryland Opera Studio.

Öznur Tülüoğlu, Juliet

Praised for her "ravishing voice" and "compelling stage presence", Turkish-American soprano Öznur Tülüoğlu, (Oz) is establishing herself as a young, rising artist "destined for bigger things." Oz will make her highly anticipated role debut as Juliette in Gounod's Roméo et Juliette in October 2026 with Mobile Opera, followed by the title role of Theodora in Handel's Theodora with In Series Opera in 2027. Her 2025–2026 season featured several significant milestones, including her role debut as Pamina with Mobile Opera, a return to Glory Denied as Younger Alyce, appearances as the soprano soloist in Mahler's Symphony No. 9 with Inscape Chamber Orchestra and Carmina Burana with Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and performances as Le Feu and Le Rossignol in Ravel's L'Enfant et les sortilèges with Bel Cantanti Opera. Oz also frequently performs with The Denyce Graves Foundation, where she serves as Executive Administrator. Oz has achieved recognition as a finalist in prestigious competitions such as the Jensen Foundation Competition, the Opera Mississippi John Alexander National Vocal Competition, and the Music International Grand Prix Competition. In 2022, she won 3rd place at the AIMS in Graz Vocal Competition and has received two Encouragement Awards from the Metropolitan Opera Laffont Competition.

Johnnie Bankens, Friar Laurent

Johnnie Bankens, bass, has been praised as an “impressive bass” and a “singer of high caliber.” His recent engagements include Sarastro in The Magic Flute and Sparafucile in Rigoletto with Mobile Opera, Il Bonzo in Madama Butterfly with Opéra Louisiane, the Sprecher in Die Zauberflöte with Opera Mississippi and the Natchez Festival of Music, and the Bishop in The Christmas Gift with Opera Mississippi. Upcoming engagements include the Commentator in Scalia/Ginsburg at the Judge Alvin B. Rubin Symposium in New Orleans, Impresario/Direttore in Donizetti’s Viva la mamma! with Shreveport Opera, and the title role in a concert performance of Bartók’s Bluebeard’s Castle at Louisiana State University. Bankens has also made solo appearances with San Diego Opera, Nevada Opera, Blue Lake Opera, and Italy’s Montefeltro Festival.

Evan Fleming, Mercutio

Hailing from New Jersey, baritone Evan Fleming is an avid performer of stage and concert works. Mr. Fleming served as an Artist in Residence with Dayton Opera for the 2025-26 season, appearing as Dancaïro (Carmen) and as a soloist in several concerts with the Dayton Philharmonic including Mozart’s Reqiuem. Evan started 2025 as a Smith Young Artist with Cedar Rapids Opera and a Tyler Young Artist with Opera on the James. While in Virginia, he appeared in several chamber operas, reprising the role of Ben in Menotti’s The Telephone and the Father in a touring production of Hansel & Gretel. In October 2025, Mr. Fleming returned to perform with Opera Company of Middlebury for a celebration of the music of Leonard Bernstein including Trouble in Tahiti. Evan is elated to sing one of his dream roles while making his debut with Mobile Opera!
