Community members gathered at the Historic Avenue Cultural Center on Friday for a Juneteenth event featuring Mobile artist Charles Smith. His artwork uses local symbols like water to reflect the beauty and deep history of the African American experience.

The Mobile County Commission-sponsored event also focused on Mobile's post-emancipation history. District 1 Commissioner Merceria Ludgood joined attendees to honor the holiday and the journey toward equality.
