A pilot was killed after a U.S. Navy Blue Angels jet crashed Thursday afternoon in Smyrna ahead of the Great Tennessee Airshow this weekend.

The F/A-18 aircraft crashed at 3 p.m. behind the Sam Davis Home, about 2 miles from the runway, while practicing for the now-cancelled demonstration. Authorities arrived within minutes.

The U.S. Navy confirmed the pilot died in the crash. While military officials have not identified the pilot, the Associated Press said it is Marine Capt. Jeff Kuss.

According to the Blue Angels, Capt. Kuss is a native of Durango, Colorado. He joined the Blue Angels in September 2014 and has accumulated more than 1,400 flight hours 175 carrier-arrested landings.

His decorations include the Strike Flight Air Medal, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, and various personal and unit awards.

Private jet skids 300 yards off Colorado runway, sustains severe damage in violent crosswind

Bearded, thin and chained at the wrists and ankles, Laurean spoke briefly with The Associated Press while being held at the Michoacan state Attorney General’s Office in Morelia, the state capital. He appeared slightly disoriented and stared straight ahead, his eyes occasionally filling up with tears as he answered a reporter’s questions in terse phrases.

“You know my name. You know who I am,” Laurean said. Asked if he wanted to say anything, Laurean answered, “Proof,” but wouldn’t explain.

The jet lost directional control around 12:15 p.m. at Telluride Regional Airport in western Colorado, the sheriff's office announced later in the afternoon.

"The pilot told deputies that just after the plane's wheels touched down that a strong, gusting-crosswind hit the plane's profile, shoving it off the runway," the authorities said in a post on Facebook. "The plane skidded approximately 300 yards coming to rest off the runway on its collapsed landing gear

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) noted Wednesday that the midsize Cessna 750, which is primarily used for long-range business or corporate travel, sustained substantial damage, beginning with the collapse of its left landing gear upon touchdown. The sheriff’s office added that the nose wheel and one of the plane's wings were also damaged during the slide.

An airplane went off the runway at Fort Lauderdale Executive Airport on Saturday.

According to Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue, the aircraft had a malfunction with its front landing gear during takeoff.

Records show the plane is Gulfstream G-IV, a fixed wing multi-engine aircraft that was built in 1989

A US Army Black Hawk helicopter crashed in Honduras, Central America, on March 5.

According to the US Army, “Pilots flying a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter made a precautionary emergency landing approximately five miles east of Soto Cano Air Base at 9:34 a.m. today.”

“All five crew members were evaluated by medical personnel, and no significant injuries have been reported. The aircrew was performing routine training in the area. An investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the incident,” the army said.
