Plenty of pirates were Irish, including Anne Bonny (1702-1782), Edward England (1685-1720), and Grace O’Malley “The Pirate Queen” (1530-1603).

But there is a more direct link between pirates and Saint Patrick’s Day.

Around 400 AD a 16-year old Roman (or a Britain) Maewyn Succat was kidnapped by Irish pirates and enslaved to a Druid chieftain. Serving for six years as a herder he escaped back to Britain but would return to Ireland a Christian missionary. Around the age of 60 he was named “Patritius” by the Pope—and is known to us today as Saint Patrick.
