Light in the Wild by Monte Dolack
This painting speaks to the alpine mysteries that can be experienced while hiking way up into the fine mists and cloud veils of some of our national parks and wilderness areas. Millions of acres of pristine forests and rivers and mountains-and the multitude of species that inhabit those vast tracts-are preserved and protected by and for the people of the United States of America. The Light in the Wild painting below was reproduced as a poster for Backpacking Light magazine in 2008.

Yellowstone-Island of Refuge by Monte Dolack 2026
Read the artist's essay below:

Yellowstone-Island of Refuge is an original 48 × 36 inch acrylic painting that I created in 2026 by portraying a Yellowstone wolf standing with two young pups against the dramatic geothermal landscape of Yellowstone National Park.

The adult wolf dominates the foreground, its weathered coat illuminated by warm golden light. Behind it, the pups remain close to their mother, creating an immediate sense of family and vulnerability.

Beyond them stretches Yellowstone in an explosion of color—steaming thermal features, distant mountains, forests, winding waterways, and glowing earth beneath a dramatic evening sky. The saturated oranges and golds of the landscape are contrasted with deep blues, violets, and brilliant turquoise.

But the wilderness is not entirely untouched. Along the distant edges, subtle traces of roads and human development remind us that this magnificent landscape is also an island.

The wolf stands within an oasis—but an oasis surrounded by a world that is becoming increasingly difficult for wildlife to inhabit.

The painting is therefore intended to work on two levels. At first glance, it is a celebration of the beauty of Yellowstone and the resilience of its wolves. At a deeper level, it is a meditation on habitat fragmentation, boundaries, and the increasingly narrow space we leave for wild animals.

Like the polar bear standing on its diminishing piece of ice, the Yellowstone wolf becomes a symbol of a larger question:

What happens when the refuge we give wildlife is no longer large enough to let them truly be wild?

Wildfire by Monte Dolack
The acrylic painting Wildfire portrays the fires in Yellowstone National Park in 1988. Monte Dolack's Wildfire poster was produced in 1992 in collaboration with the National Wildlife Federation. In this vivid landscape the power of fire engulfs the forest at the edge of a lake. Swans flee into the air behind a yellow headed blackbird.
Thanks to all the firefighters who protect our lives and homes and eternal gratitude to those who protect our wild places-home to many

Ghost Ship by Monte Dolack
Elegantly Framed Painting For Sale
Ghost Ship is a 10 x 9 acrylic on panel painting created by Monte Dolack in 2025. According to Dolack "my wife and I were walking along Wrightsville Beach in North Carolina near the time of sunset. She brought my attention to a changing shape in the clouds on the horizon. For a fleeting instant we both observed an ethereal silver tipped three masted ship in the cloud formation which disappeared moments later. This area of the Atlantic Ocean is known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic-rich with the bones of 500 years of lost ships-including some pirate ships. When I got back into the studio I made a little sketch of the ship from memory which later manifested as the Ghost Ship painting with my wife as witness to this magical moment."
Ghost Ship is a 10 x 9" acrylic on panel painting which is elegantly floated by the artist onto archival linen mounted on a Baltic birch wood panel. The framed size of the painting is 19.25 x 18.25" Purchase here: https://www.dolack.com/collections/paintings-monte-dolack/products/ghostship

Read the essay below by award winning Montana author and activist Rick Bass to learn more about the creation of this fine art print and how to contact The Montana Project to purchase the print:
"Steadily, quietly, an amazing body of work is emerging from the ancient inland rainforest in the Black Ram section of northwest Montana's Yaak Valley.
Monte's enormous portrait of the diversity-some of the diversity-in this region is a classic example of this beloved artist using his singular ability to paint a narrative and tell a story. Titled Song of the Ancient Forest this painting was made in support of designating a climate refuge-the nation's first-in the northwest corner of the Yaak Valley. A small run of limited edition fine art prints is available for $300 each which will help support the work of The Montana Project-host of this year's Climate Aid event which will take place in Bozeman Montana on October 2, 2026
In this painting, the guitar being played was made from a 315 year old Engleman spruce which was toppled to the earth by a clearcut. The guitar is summoning many of the animals who knew the tree from which the guitar came back when it was a living part of their forest. Now the guitar advocates for the protection of their forest. In these burning times, it is a joy to see artists such as Monte Dolack supporting climate initiatives that help slow the rate of climate change with a made-in-Montana solution: protect our old and mature forests.
