Since 2021, Northwestern Energy has committed to supporting Montana Repertory Theatre’s Pick-What-You-Pay ticketing system. Over the past five years, thousands of Montanans of all ages and backgrounds gained free and affordable access to the arts with their help.

During our 2025-2026 Season, their gift supported:

Our Educational Outreach Tour, JabberDoggy (and Other Made-up Words), which reached over 6,000 K-12 students across the state. Of the over 30 participating schools, roughly half used the Pick-What-You-Pay model due to budget constraints. This means that 3,000 kids experienced professional theatre and theatre education with the help of Northwestern Energy.

Our fall Plays on Tap production, Lost & Found at the Missoula Art Museum, which was attended by nearly 700 patrons. Of these patrons, 67% attended using the Pick-What-You-Pay model.

Our spring production, Can’t Drink Salt Water, which was attended by over 3,000 patrons. One-third attended using the Pick-What-You-Pay model, including 350 people who saw the show for free.

Lastly, our First Reads Series at Missoula Public Library offered free admission to hundreds of patrons.

Montana Repertory Theatre debuted The Christians, by acclaimed playwright Lucas Hnath, to Missoula audiences as part of our inaugural First Reads series at the Missoula Public Library. We’re excited to bring it to full production with a stellar local cast and our incredible church partners. If you’re a fan of our immersive, site-based productions, The Christians takes that experience to the next level.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT: Lucas Hnath

Lucas Hnath’s most recent play, Dana H., was at the Vineyard Theatre in New York. Lucas received a 2017 Tony Award nomination for Best Play with A Doll’s House, Part 2. Hnath’s other plays include Hillary and Clinton, The Thin Place, Red Speedo, The Christians, A Public Reading of an Unproduced Screenplay About the Death of Walt Disney, Isaac’s Eye and Death Tax. He has been produced on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre and Off-Broadway at New York Theatre Workshop, Playwrights Horizons, Soho Rep and Ensemble Studio Theatre. His plays have also premiered at the Humana Festival of New Plays, Victory Gardens and South Coast Repertory. He is a New York Theatre Workshop Usual Suspect, a member of Ensemble Studio Theatre and an alumnus of New Dramatists. Awards: Whiting Award, Guggenheim Fellowship, Kesselring Prize, Outer Critics Circle Award for Best New Play, Obie Award for Playwriting, Steinberg Playwright Award and the Windham-Campbell Literary Prize.

Our 22nd Annual Educational Tour, HER-cules: The Twelve Trials and the Story I Told, has hit the ground running, and will perform for dozens of schools and communities (and over 6,000 students!) across Montana this fall. Thank you so much to the Zootown Arts Community Center / ZACC for hosting our Missoula premiere of the 22nd Annual Educational Outreach Tour, HER-cules: The Twelve Trials and the Story I Told — we are so grateful to use this important community space. MEET THE CAST: Shadie Wallette as AVERY

Shadie Wallette is a Crow and Northern Cheyenne actor who recently graduated from the University of Montana with a BFA in Acting.

Their recent credits include Star in the world premiere of Can’t Drink Salt Water, by Kendra Mylnechuk Potter, with Montana Repertory Theatre and an apprenticeship for Montana Shakespeare in the Parks. They are excited to bring such a personal story to the rest of Montana and hope everyone likes it as much as they do!

MEET THE CAST: Kairi Lising as BECK

Kairi Lising is a Filipino American performer based in Missoula, MT. Kairi recently graduated from the Unversity of Montana with a BFA in Acting and a BA in Journalism.

Kairi’s most recent roles include an upcoming feature film The Last Hurrah and the University of Montana’s production of Anything Goes. When Kairi isn’t acting, you might be able to find her on your tv screen as a weather forecaster at abc FOX’s Non Stop Local.

As someone born and raised in Great Falls, Kairi is so excited to explore more of the state she grew up while doing the thing she is most passionate about: telling stories.
